Scholarship Application Timeline: When to Apply and Key Deadlines to Plan For 2026–2027

Most scholarship applications are not lost on quality. They are lost on timing. A strong candidate who discovers a deadline three weeks before it closes has to rush transcripts, chase referees, write essays in a panic and book a language test that no longer has seats. A candidate with the same grades who started twelve months earlier submits calmly, with polished documents and time to spare. The difference between the two is rarely talent — it is a calendar.

This guide gives you that calendar. It maps the full 2026–2027 scholarship season month by month, explains when you should start each stage of preparation, and lists the verified application windows for ten of the world’s most popular government scholarship programmes: Chevening, Commonwealth, Fulbright, DAAD EPOS, MEXT, the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Erasmus Mundus, Eiffel, Türkiye Burslari and Stipendium Hungaricum. Every programme date below was checked against the programme’s official pages or official call documents at the time of writing. Where the next cycle’s dates have not yet been published, we say so clearly and show you the last confirmed cycle instead — because planning around a labelled pattern is useful, while planning around an invented date is dangerous.

Whether you are a final-year undergraduate in Dhaka, a young professional in Lagos or a master’s graduate in Jakarta, the rhythm in this guide is the same: research early, prepare documents before windows open, apply in waves, and never let a single deadline carry your whole future. Browse the full list of opportunities in our scholarships directory as you read, and keep this page open while you build your own timeline.

Scholarship Deadlines at a Glance

The table below summarises the flagship programmes covered in this guide. Read the “status” column carefully: some dates are confirmed for the current cycle, while others show the most recent confirmed cycle because the next call has not opened yet. In every case, the pattern of months repeats almost every year, which is what makes forward planning possible.

Programme Destination Application window (verified) Status
Chevening Scholarship United Kingdom Opened 4 August 2026; closes 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC Confirmed for 2027/28 entry
Commonwealth Master’s & PhD Scholarships United Kingdom Opened 8 September 2026; closes 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST Confirmed for 2027/28 entry
DAAD EPOS Germany Per course; many courses close 15 October 2026 (e.g. Freiburg MEG), others run to mid-November 2026 Confirmed per course for October 2027 start
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Europe (multi-country) Per consortium; most open October 2026 and close between December 2026 and January 2027 Current cycle for 2027 start; check each consortium
Eiffel Excellence France Last confirmed campaign: call opened 1 October 2025; institutions submitted nominations to Campus France by 8 January 2026; results from end of March 2026 Previous cycle shown; next campaign expected to follow the same October–January pattern
Stipendium Hungaricum Hungary Last confirmed call closed 15 January 2026 at 14:00 CET Previous cycle (2026/27) shown; call opens each autumn
Türkiye Burslari Türkiye Last confirmed window: 10 January – 20 February 2026 Previous cycle shown; single annual window in the same months
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) China Applications run from early January to early April each year; universities and dispatching authorities set exact closing dates inside that window Annual pattern per CSC guidance
MEXT (Embassy Recommendation) Japan Recruitment runs April–May of the year before arrival; each Japanese embassy sets its own exact deadline Annual pattern per official Study in Japan guidance
Fulbright Foreign Student Program United States No single global deadline; country competitions typically open around February and close on country-specific dates across the year Check your own Fulbright commission or US embassy page

Two lessons stand out from this table. First, the scholarship year is heavily front-loaded: the biggest deadlines cluster between August and January, not in the spring when many students first start thinking about studying abroad. Second, almost every programme runs roughly a full year ahead of the start of study. Applications you submit in autumn 2026 are mostly for courses beginning in autumn 2027. If you want to be sitting in a lecture hall in September 2027, your real work happens now — not next summer.

Why Scholarship Timelines Work Backwards

Every scholarship deadline is actually three deadlines stacked on top of each other. The first is the one printed on the programme website. The second is the hidden deadline inside it: the latest date by which your referees can realistically write and upload their letters, your university can issue certified transcripts, and your documents can be translated, notarised or attested. The third is the deadline before that: the last sensible date to book an IELTS, TOEFL, GRE or GMAT sitting so that your score report reaches the institution in time.

Working backwards from the printed deadline is the single most useful planning habit you can build. Take Chevening as an example. The official Chevening timeline for the 2027/28 cycle opened applications on 4 August 2026 and closes them on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. But a well-prepared applicant treated June 2026 as their real start: that is when they chose their three UK courses, confirmed their two referees, and began drafting the four essay answers. By the time the portal opened, they were editing, not starting. Our step-by-step companion guide, How to Apply for Scholarships for International Students, walks through that preparation sequence in detail.

The backward logic also explains why “when to apply” and “when to start” are different questions with answers months apart. You apply inside a window that may last only six to ten weeks. You start nine to fifteen months before the course begins. The month-by-month plan in the next section is built on exactly that distinction.

Your Month-by-Month Planning Timeline

The plan below assumes you are targeting an autumn 2027 start — the intake served by the 2026–2027 application season. If your target intake is later, shift the whole plan forward by one cycle; the sequence and the gaps between stages stay the same.

Month What happens What you should do
August 2026 Chevening opens (4 August). DAAD EPOS course windows are open. Finalise your shortlist of programmes and courses. Confirm eligibility for each one. Open accounts on every application portal you plan to use.
September 2026 Commonwealth Master’s & PhD applications open (8 September). University admissions for autumn 2027 begin opening. Request certified transcripts and degree certificates now — university registries are slow at peak season. Ask your referees formally, with your CV and deadlines attached.
October 2026 Chevening closes 6 October. Commonwealth closes 20 October. Most DAAD EPOS courses close mid-October. Erasmus Mundus consortium windows start opening. Eiffel call typically opens. Submit Chevening and Commonwealth early in the month, not on deadline day. Sit any remaining language tests. Start Erasmus Mundus applications as each consortium opens.
November 2026 Stipendium Hungaricum call typically opens mid-November. Remaining DAAD EPOS courses close. Erasmus Mundus windows in full swing. Prepare Hungarian and Erasmus applications. Apply for university admission in parallel where a programme requires a separate admission application.
December 2026 Many Erasmus Mundus scholarship deadlines fall in December–January. UK university application deadlines for popular courses approach. Finish Erasmus Mundus submissions. Draft Türkiye Burslari and CSC documents so January is about submitting, not writing.
January 2027 Stipendium Hungaricum closes (15 January in the last confirmed call). Eiffel institutional submissions reach Campus France in early January. Türkiye Burslari opens (10 January in the last confirmed window). CSC window opens. The busiest month of the season. Submit in the first half of the month wherever possible; portals slow down near deadlines and time zones cause real losses.
February 2027 Türkiye Burslari closes (20 February in the last confirmed window). Fulbright country competitions typically open around February. Chevening interview shortlists announced mid-February. Submit Türkiye Burslari well before the close. Open your Fulbright country page and note its exact deadline. If shortlisted by Chevening, begin structured interview preparation.
March 2027 Chevening interviews run March–April. Eiffel results announced from end of March (last confirmed campaign). Stipendium Hungaricum entrance examinations begin. Interview season. Keep documents ready: shortlisted candidates often must upload certificates and references at short notice.
April 2027 CSC window closes in early April. MEXT embassy recruitment for the following year’s arrival opens. Close out CSC submissions. If you are targeting Japan for 2028 arrival, your MEXT season starts now — a full cycle overlaps the end of this one.
May 2027 MEXT embassy deadlines fall through May; first screening (document review, written exams, interviews) runs May onwards. MEXT candidates: treat your embassy’s exact date as immovable. Everyone else: chase outstanding university offers and funding letters.
June 2027 Chevening results announced from mid-June. Stipendium Hungaricum final results typically announced June–July. Results season. If selected, move immediately to acceptance steps, visa document gathering and accommodation research.
July 2027 Successful Chevening candidates must hold an unconditional UK university offer by the July deadline set in the official timeline. Visa applications for autumn starts. UK Student visa applicants must show maintenance funds of £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 per month outside London (current rates) held for the required period — plan the bank timeline early.
August–September 2027 Pre-departure briefings, travel, enrolment. Arrive, enrol, register with the scholarship body, and keep every award letter and payment schedule somewhere safe.

Print this table or copy it into your own planner, then adjust it to your personal shortlist. A generic calendar gets you started; a personalised one — with your exact programmes, your embassy’s MEXT date and your Fulbright commission’s deadline — gets you funded. The StudyGraduate tools hub includes planning tools that can help you track deadlines alongside your budget and document preparation.

Programme-by-Programme: Verified Windows and What They Mean for Your Planning

Chevening Scholarship (UK) — confirmed 2027/28 timeline

Chevening publishes one of the clearest timelines in the scholarship world, and the current cycle is confirmed: applications opened on 4 August 2026 and close on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Reading committees assess applications from mid-October 2026 to January 2027, interview shortlists are announced in mid-February 2027, interviews take place in March and April 2027, and results are released from mid-June 2027. Successful candidates must submit at least one unconditional UK university offer by the deadline in July 2027, and studies begin in September or October 2027. The planning lesson: Chevening is an essay competition long before it is a form. The two-month window is for submitting, not for discovering what leadership story you want to tell. Read our dedicated guide to the Chevening Scholarship 2027 for eligibility and essay detail.

Commonwealth Master’s and PhD Scholarships (UK) — confirmed 2027/28 window

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s main Master’s and PhD schemes opened on 8 September 2026 and close on 20 October 2026 at 16:00 BST, according to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Two timing traps catch applicants every year. First, you must also apply through a nominator, and nominating agencies often set earlier internal deadlines than the CSC’s own closing date. Second, PhD applicants need the support of a potential UK supervisor identified in the application — and supervisors cannot be found in the final week. Contact academics in August and September, not mid-October.

DAAD EPOS (Germany) — one programme, dozens of deadlines

DAAD EPOS does not have a single deadline, because you apply to individual development-related courses, each of which sets its own window in the DAAD scholarship database. The pattern, however, is consistent: applications are made roughly a year before the course starts, and most deadlines cluster in the autumn. For October 2027 entry, the University of Freiburg’s MSc Environmental Governance, for example, ran its application phase from 15 June to 15 October 2026, while Göttingen’s Development Economics course accepts applications from 1 October to 15 November. EPOS pays €992 per month at master’s level and €1,300 per month at doctoral level, rising to €1,400 from February 2026 — but none of that matters if you discover your chosen course closed in October while you were waiting for a single January deadline that never existed. Check your specific course page first, and build your calendar around the earliest deadline on your list.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (Europe) — October to January, consortium by consortium

Erasmus Mundus has no central application at all: each joint master’s consortium runs its own call on its own website. The European Commission’s own guidance is that, in most cases, you should submit your application between October and January for courses starting the following academic year, and the current cycle fits that pattern — consortia such as PlantHealth opened on 1 October 2026 with a scholarship deadline of 1 January 2027, and many others close in December or January. Because you may apply to multiple consortia, Erasmus Mundus rewards the organised: keep a spreadsheet of each programme’s opening date, scholarship deadline and document list, because no two are identical.

Eiffel Excellence (France) — the deadline you cannot apply to directly

Eiffel breaks the usual pattern: students never submit an application themselves. French institutions nominate candidates, and Campus France receives those nominations. In the last confirmed campaign, the call opened on 1 October 2025, institutions had to submit applications to Campus France by 8 January 2026, and results were published from the end of March 2026. The next campaign had not published different dates when this guide was written, so plan on the same October-to-January rhythm — but understand what it means: your personal deadline is not 8 January. It is the much earlier internal deadline of the French institution you hope will nominate you, which means admission applications and conversations with French universities belong in your September–November plan. Eiffel pays €1,200 per month at master’s level and €2,100 per month at doctoral level from January 2026, covers international travel, and does not pay tuition fees directly.

Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary) — mid-January, every year

Stipendium Hungaricum runs one of the tightest windows in Europe. The call typically opens in mid-November, and in the last confirmed call applications closed on 15 January 2026 at 14:00 CET. Sending partners then nominate candidates by the end of February, entrance examinations run from March to May, and final results arrive in June and July. The hidden trap is the dual application: you apply on the Hungarian portal and through your home country’s sending partner, and the sending partner may set its own earlier deadline or extra requirements. A mid-January deadline also means your documents collide with the New Year holiday period, when universities and ministries are closed — another reason the professionals finish their document file in November.

Türkiye Burslari (Türkiye) — one short window for everything

Türkiye Burslari compresses its entire intake into a single annual window. The last confirmed application period ran from 10 January to 20 February 2026, as announced on the official Türkiye Scholarships website, and the programme uses the same January–February window each year. Because the award includes university placement, there is no separate admission application to run in parallel — but you must choose up to twelve programmes inside the application itself, which means your programme research has to be finished before the window opens. Evaluation and interviews follow in the months after the February close, with the one-year Turkish language course and degree study beginning in the autumn. Monthly stipends currently stand at 6,500 TL for bachelor’s, 9,500 TL for master’s and 13,000 TL for PhD students.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) — January to April, set locally

For CSC, the China Scholarship Council’s guidance is that applications open between early January and early April each year. Inside that national window, the exact dates are set by the receiving agency: Type A (bilateral) applications go through the dispatching authority in your home country, and Type B (university programme) applications go to individual Chinese universities, each with its own closing date. The practical consequence is that “the CSC deadline” does not exist as a single day. Your deadline is your embassy’s or your university’s date, and serious applicants confirm it directly with that office in November or December, before the window opens.

MEXT (Japan) — the spring scholarship

MEXT is the great exception to the autumn pattern. For embassy recommendation — the main route for undergraduate and research students — the official Study in Japan guidance states that recruitment for arrival in Japan the following April takes place between April and May of the previous year, with first screening (document review, written examinations and interviews) running from May onwards, run separately by each Japanese embassy. The embassy pages also publish past examination questions — see the official MEXT examination question archive — which tells you how to use the winter months if MEXT is your target: while everyone else is submitting January applications, you should be revising for MEXT’s written exams. University recommendation follows a different, later pattern set by each Japanese university, typically in the autumn and winter.

Fulbright (USA) — there is no global deadline

Fulbright’s Foreign Student Program is administered by binational commissions and US embassies in more than 160 countries, and each sets its own competition dates. Most country competitions open around February, and deadlines fall at different points across the year depending on the country. This is the programme where generic deadline lists fail hardest: the only correct date is the one on your own country’s Fulbright page. Find it in January, before the window opens, and work backwards from it. The same country-by-country logic applies to eligibility details, which is why our Fulbright Foreign Student Program guide stresses checking your commission’s rules first.

The Document Timeline: What to Prepare, and When

Deadlines feel sudden only when documents are left until the application window. Most of the file you need is identical across programmes, so build it once, early, and reuse it. Keep every item as a clean scanned PDF in a single folder, named consistently.

  • 6–12 months before deadlines: passport (renew it if it expires within a year of your planned start); degree certificates and full transcripts requested from your university; certified translations of anything not in the destination language or English.
  • 4–6 months before: language test booked and taken (IELTS, TOEFL or an accepted alternative — check our test preparation resources); CV in the format each programme expects; referee shortlist confirmed.
  • 2–4 months before: essay and motivation-letter drafts; study plan or research proposal for research degrees; supervisor outreach for PhD applications; employer recommendation letters for work-experience-based schemes such as DAAD EPOS.
  • Inside the window: submission only. Upload, double-check, submit, and save the confirmation and a PDF copy of the submitted application.

Our Scholarship Application Checklist gives the full document list item by item — use it as the packing list for the folder described above.

Common Timeline Mistakes That Cost Students a Full Year

Starting when the window opens. A six-week window is enough to submit a finished application, not to create one. Referees need notice, transcripts need processing, and essays need more than one draft.

Trusting a deadline you saw on social media. Aggregator posts recycle old dates constantly. If a date is not on the programme’s official site or official call document, treat it as a rumour and verify it before you plan around it.

Ignoring time zones and time of day. Chevening closes at 11:00 UTC; Commonwealth at 16:00 BST; Stipendium Hungaricum at 14:00 CET. A deadline of “15 January” is a specific hour in a specific city, and it may be the middle of your night.

Forgetting the second deadline inside the first. Nominator deadlines (Commonwealth, Stipendium Hungaricum sending partners), institutional deadlines (Eiffel) and university admission deadlines (DAAD EPOS courses, Erasmus consortia) can all fall weeks before the headline date.

Applying to one programme per year. A single application means a single point of failure and a twelve-month wait after any rejection. A planned portfolio of applications across the October, January and spring waves spreads your risk across the whole season — the strategy our Erasmus Mundus guide and other programme guides on this site are designed to support. You can also compare destinations side by side in our study abroad section before you commit a year to one country’s calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start preparing scholarship applications?

Start nine to fifteen months before your intended course start. For an autumn 2027 start, serious preparation begins in mid-2026: shortlisting programmes, requesting transcripts, booking language tests and drafting essays, so that the August–January application windows are used for submitting rather than starting.

What is the busiest month for scholarship deadlines?

October and January are the twin peaks. In October 2026, Chevening (6 October), most DAAD EPOS courses (mid-October) and Commonwealth (20 October) all close within two weeks of each other. In January, Stipendium Hungaricum, Eiffel institutional submissions, many Erasmus Mundus consortia, Türkiye Burslari’s opening and the CSC window all collide.

Can I apply for scholarships before I finish my degree?

Usually yes, if you will graduate before the course starts. Most programmes accept final-year students with a transcript to date plus a certificate of expected graduation, and ask for the final degree certificate later. Check each programme’s exact rule, because a few schemes require the completed degree in hand at application.

What happens if I miss a scholarship deadline?

For the major government schemes, there is no late window and no exceptions process — the portal closes and the next chance is the following year’s cycle. This is why a portfolio across several programmes matters: missing one deadline should never end your season.

Do scholarship deadlines fall on the same dates every year?

The months are highly consistent, but exact dates move by days or weeks between cycles. Chevening, for example, reliably opens in August and closes in early October, but you must always confirm the current cycle’s exact dates and times on the official site before relying on them.

How far in advance are scholarships awarded before the course starts?

Typically six to twelve months. Chevening announces results from mid-June 2027 for courses starting that September; MEXT runs even longer, recruiting in spring of the year before arrival. Budget for a long gap between applying and travelling, and keep your contact details on every portal up to date throughout it.

Should I apply for university admission and scholarships at the same time?

It depends on the scheme. Türkiye Burslari and MEXT (embassy route) include placement within the scholarship process. DAAD EPOS combines course and scholarship in one application. Eiffel requires admission first, because the institution nominates you. Chevening lets you apply for the scholarship and your UK courses in parallel, but you must hold an unconditional offer by its July deadline. Always check which model your programme uses.

Is it too late to apply for 2027 entry?

Not necessarily. As this guide is published, the January wave (Stipendium Hungaricum, Eiffel nominations, Türkiye Burslari, CSC, many Erasmus Mundus consortia) and spring routes (Fulbright country competitions, MEXT embassy recruitment) are still ahead. Work through the month-by-month table above and target the windows that are still open.
