📖 Overview
Chevening Scholarship 2027 in the UK: Fully Funded Master’s Guide
The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. It offers future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from around the world a fully funded one-year master’s degree at any UK university, in almost any subject. For the 2027-28 cycle, applications opened in August 2026 and scholars will begin their studies in September or October 2027. If you are a graduate with at least two years of work experience, a clear career plan and a genuine intention to return home and create positive change, Chevening is one of the most prestigious — and most competitive — routes to a UK master’s degree that exists.
This guide explains, in plain language, exactly who can apply, what the scholarship covers, how the selection process works, and how to build the strongest possible application. Everything factual in this guide has been checked against the official Chevening website, and we tell you clearly where a detail depends on your country or your chosen university, because Chevening runs one global competition with country-level administration through British embassies and high commissions.
Chevening is not simply a funding scheme. Since the programme began, it has built an alumni community of more than 55,000 people across over 160 countries and territories, including heads of government, senior ministers, ambassadors, business leaders and civil-society founders. When you apply, you are not only asking for your tuition and living costs to be paid; you are asking to join that network — and the selectors assess you on that basis. Understanding this from the start will shape every essay you write and every course you choose.

Who Is Eligible for Chevening?
Chevening eligibility is strict, and ineligible applications are rejected before a human being ever reads your essays. According to the official Chevening eligibility criteria, you must meet all of the following conditions.
Citizenship and residence
You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory. More than 160 countries and territories are eligible, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Nigeria and Indonesia. If you are applying for an award from an ODA-eligible country, you must be resident in an ODA-eligible country — not necessarily your country of citizenship — and you must show a clear intention to support your country of award. You must not be resident in the UK at the time of application, and you must not hold British or dual British citizenship, except for the specific British Overseas Territory and BN(O) Hong Kong exceptions described on the official site.
Your undergraduate degree
You must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for entry to a UK master’s programme. Critically, you must have finished your undergraduate studies at least two years before the Chevening application deadline — even if your certificate has not yet been issued. You will, however, need the certificate itself by the time of your interview. Holding a master’s degree already does not prevent you from applying for a second master’s in the UK.
The 2,800 hours work experience rule
You need at least two years of work experience, equivalent to 2,800 hours, acquired after completing your undergraduate degree. Chevening counts full-time and part-time employment, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships towards this total, provided the experience was gained after your first degree. This is one of the most common points of confusion. Experience gained during your undergraduate studies does not count towards the post-degree requirement in the way many applicants assume, so calculate your hours honestly, month by month, employer by employer, before you apply. If you reach the deadline with 2,200 qualifying hours, you are not eligible this cycle — waiting a year and applying with a stronger record is far better than submitting an ineligible application.
The return-home commitment
You must commit to returning to your home country — your country of award — for at least two years after your scholarship ends. This is a formal condition of the award, not a preference. Chevening funds people who will apply their UK education at home, and your essays and interview should treat that commitment as the centre of your story, not an afterthought.
Three course choices
You must apply to three different, eligible UK university courses, and you must hold an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the offer deadline on the official timeline — for the 2027-28 cycle, 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027. Courses must be full-time, taught master’s programmes starting in the autumn term, based in the UK, and leading to a postgraduate qualification. Part-time, distance-learning, undergraduate and PhD programmes are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship.
Who is not eligible
You cannot apply if you are an employee, a former employee within the last two years, or an immediate relative of an employee of a UK government department, the British Council, a partner UK university or their wholly owned subsidiaries. You also cannot apply if you have previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship, subject to the fellowship exception described on the official site. There is no upper age limit for Chevening — what matters is your record, your plan and your potential.
What Does the Chevening Scholarship Cover?
Chevening is genuinely fully funded for the scholar. The official Chevening page on what the scholarship covers lists the following benefits.
| Benefit | What Chevening pays |
|---|---|
| Tuition fees | Paid in full for your eligible one-year master’s course |
| Monthly stipend | A monthly personal living allowance covering accommodation and living expenses; the rate depends on whether you study inside or outside London and is reviewed annually |
| Flights | Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route, for you only |
| Visa | The cost of your entry clearance (visa) application, for you only |
| Arrival allowance | Paid to help you settle in when you arrive in the UK |
| Departure allowance | A homeward departure allowance at the end of the award |
| Travel top-up | A travel top-up allowance |
| TB test | A contribution of up to £75 towards a tuberculosis test, where one is required |
| Events and network | A tailored engagement programme: networking events with scholars, alumni, the FCDO, speakers and partner organisations |
Two honest notes. First, Chevening does not publish a single stipend figure that applies to everyone, because the monthly amount differs between London and the rest of the UK and is reviewed each year — any website quoting one exact pound figure for all scholars is oversimplifying. Second, the award covers you only: it does not pay for dependants to accompany you. Scholars with families need a separate, realistic financial plan for anyone travelling with them, and should check the current UK Student visa dependant rules on GOV.UK before making decisions.

Choosing Your Three Courses and Universities
Your three course choices do more selection work than most applicants realise. They must be three different eligible courses — they can be at the same university or at three different universities — and together they should tell one coherent story about the problem you work on and the skills you need. A public-health practitioner choosing health-policy and health-systems courses at three universities makes sense. The same person adding an unrelated finance degree does not, and the reading committee will notice.
Start your research early in our universities directory, and compare institutions in the rankings section. Chevening scholars study everywhere in the UK, from large research universities to specialist institutes. Popular choices in recent cohorts include programmes at the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London, but a well-argued course at a less famous university will always beat a famous name with a weak justification. Selectors ask why this course, why this curriculum, why now — prestige is not an answer.
Practical course checks before you commit your three choices: confirm the course is a full-time taught master’s of roughly one year; confirm it starts in September or October 2027; read the module list and name specific modules in your study essay; check the university’s own entry requirements and English language requirements, because Chevening itself does not set a separate English test, but your university offer may be conditional on one; and apply to the universities themselves early, because university admissions deadlines are separate from the Chevening deadline and popular courses fill up.
How to Apply for Chevening, Step by Step
- Check your eligibility honestly. Work through the citizenship, degree-timing, 2,800 hours and return-commitment rules on the official site. Do not apply in a cycle where you clearly fall short.
- Research and shortlist courses. Build a long list of eligible one-year master’s courses, then narrow it to three that form one coherent plan. Record each university’s own application deadline.
- Prepare your four essays. The online application asks essay questions covering your leadership and influencing experience, your networking skills, your plan of study in the UK, and your career plan after the scholarship. Draft them offline, with concrete examples, well before the deadline.
- Gather your documents. You will need a valid passport or national ID, your undergraduate transcripts and certificate, and the names of two referees. Documents are uploaded at the stages the official timeline specifies — interview candidates must upload all documentation at least seven working days before their interview.
- Submit the online application before the deadline. Apply through the official application system linked from Chevening’s application timeline page. For the 2027-28 cycle applications close in October 2026 at 11:00 UTC. Check what 11:00 UTC is in your time zone and submit days early — the system is unforgiving at the deadline.
- Apply to your three universities separately. A Chevening application is not a university application. Submit each university application through that university’s own admissions process.
- Prepare for interview if shortlisted. Shortlists are produced by British embassies and high commissions in mid-February 2027, and interviews run from March to April 2027. Read the official interview guidance and be ready to discuss every claim in your essays.
- Secure your unconditional offer. If your interview succeeds, results are announced from mid-June 2027, and you must submit at least one unconditional offer by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027.
- Complete pre-departure steps. Visa application, TB test where required, travel booking through the approved route, and Chevening’s own pre-departure briefings in your country.
Required Documents
- Valid passport or national identity card.
- Undergraduate degree certificate (required by interview stage) and full transcripts.
- Two references — choose referees who know your professional or academic work well and can write specifically about your leadership and potential.
- University offer letters for your chosen courses as they arrive; an unconditional offer from at least one choice by the July deadline.
- Evidence supporting your work-experience calculation, if requested during eligibility checks.
Keep scans clean, complete and in the formats the online system requests. Illegible transcripts and missing pages cause more avoidable damage in scholarship competitions than almost anything else.

Selection Criteria: How to Improve Your Chances
Every eligible application is assessed by independent reading committees, then shortlisted by embassies and high commissions, then tested at interview. Across all three stages, assessors are looking for the same four things your essays must prove.
Leadership and influence. Show, with specific examples, where you have led people, projects or change — and what happened as a result. Titles impress less than outcomes. A district officer who redesigned a service used by thousands, or an NGO worker who built a programme from nothing, has stronger material than a senior job title with no story behind it.
Networking. Chevening scholars are expected to build relationships in the UK and maintain them for life. Describe networks you have already built and used — professional associations, cross-border collaborations, alumni groups — and how you will use the Chevening community itself.
A clear post-study career plan. This is the heart of the application. Name the role, sector or venture you aim for on return, the problem it addresses in your country, and the milestones for your first years home. Vague ambitions to “serve my nation” fail; a specific, achievable plan that needs exactly the skills your three courses teach is what succeeds.
A well-researched study plan. Explain why the UK, why these courses, and why these modules. Show you have read curricula, compared options and chosen deliberately. Use our study tools, including cost and deadline planners, to organise the practical side while you write.
Writing the Four Chevening Essays
Because every eligible applicant has a degree and two years of experience, the essays are where the competition is actually decided. Reading committees assess thousands of applications in a few months, so clarity and evidence matter more than elegant prose. Write in the first person, use short paragraphs, and structure each answer around real situations: what the problem was, what you personally did, what changed, and what you learned. Quantify wherever you honestly can — team sizes, budgets, people reached, services improved — because specific numbers make claims checkable and memorable.
For the leadership essay, choose examples where your decisions affected other people or an organisation’s direction, not only your own tasks. Committees distinguish between seniority and leadership: managing a small team through a difficult reform usually demonstrates more leadership than describing the prestige of your employer. For the networking essay, avoid listing memberships. Instead, narrate one or two relationships that produced a concrete result — a partnership, a funded project, knowledge transferred between institutions — and explain how you maintain professional relationships over time. Then connect this to Chevening itself: the programme’s events, its alumni in your sector, and the UK institutions you hope to build lasting links with.
The study-in-the-UK essay should read like a well-researched decision, not a compliment to British education in general. Name modules, dissertation possibilities and distinctive features of each of your three courses, and explain what gap in your current knowledge each one fills. If the same course exists in your home country, say why the UK version, its faculty, its industry or policy links, or its cohort, is the right investment. Finally, the career-plan essay should map a timeline: your target role within a year of returning, where you expect to be in five years, and the longer-term change you want to contribute to. Show that your employers, sector trends and national priorities make this plan realistic — and that the master’s is the missing step, not a detour.
Draft early, then cut ruthlessly. Word limits in the online form are strict, and committees reward applications where every sentence carries evidence. Ask a trusted colleague — ideally someone who does not know your work well — to read your drafts and summarise your plan back to you. If they cannot, the essays are not yet clear enough, however impressive the underlying career may be.
How the 2,800 Hours Are Counted: A Worked Example
Applicants often ask how part-time and voluntary work translate into hours. Chevening expresses two years of experience as 2,800 hours, which works out at roughly 1,400 hours per year. A full-time role at 40 hours per week reaches that pace comfortably within two calendar years. A part-time role at 20 hours per week takes roughly twice as long in calendar terms. Voluntary and internship experience gained after your undergraduate degree can be combined with paid employment to reach the threshold, provided it is genuine, verifiable experience. Build a simple table for yourself: employer or organisation, role, start and end dates, hours per week, and total hours. If the total is clearly above 2,800, you can apply with confidence. If it sits close to the line, be conservative — experience that cannot be evidenced should not be counted, and an application found ineligible wastes the entire cycle.
Note also the interaction between the two timing rules. Your undergraduate studies must have finished at least two years before the application deadline, and your 2,800 hours must have been acquired after that degree. In practice, most successful applicants have three to ten years of professional experience, which gives them both the hours and the leadership evidence the essays demand. There is no disadvantage in applying at 30 or 40 rather than 24 — Chevening funds established and emerging leaders, and maturity of plan counts for more than speed.
Common Mistakes That Weaken Chevening Applications
- Miscalculating work experience. Counting undergraduate internships or rounding hours up. Count only post-degree experience and keep a spreadsheet.
- Applying before you are eligible. If your degree finished less than two years before the deadline, wait for the next cycle.
- Three incoherent course choices. Courses chosen for university brand names rather than one development goal.
- Generic essays. Leadership claims without examples, numbers or outcomes. Every paragraph should contain something only you could have written.
- Ignoring the return commitment. Treating the two-year return rule as a formality, or writing a career plan based in the UK. Either undermines your credibility.
- Submitting at the deadline. The portal closes at 11:00 UTC sharp; time-zone confusion ends applications every year.
- Applying to universities too late. Winning Chevening but holding no unconditional offer by 8 July means losing the award.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does Chevening require IELTS or TOEFL?
Chevening itself does not set an English language test requirement. However, your chosen universities may require IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted test for your offer to become unconditional. Check each course’s requirements and test early enough to meet the July offer deadline.
2. Can I apply for a PhD or a part-time or distance-learning master’s with Chevening?
No. Chevening Scholarships fund full-time, UK-based, taught master’s degrees of about one year. PhD study, part-time study and distance learning are not eligible.
3. I already have a master’s degree. Can I still apply?
Yes. The official eligibility guidance confirms that holding a master’s degree does not prevent you from applying for a second master’s in the UK, provided you meet all other criteria and can justify the further study in your career plan.
4. How much is the Chevening monthly stipend?
Chevening pays a monthly personal living allowance that varies depending on whether you study inside or outside London, and the rates are reviewed annually. Because no single figure applies to all scholars, check the official coverage page during your cycle rather than relying on figures quoted on unofficial sites.
5. Can my family come with me on a Chevening Scholarship?
The award covers the scholar only — flights, visa costs and allowances are for you alone. Dependants are not funded by Chevening, so families need independent financial planning and must check current UK visa rules for dependants of sponsored students.
6. What happens if I do not get an unconditional offer by 8 July 2027?
An unconditional offer from at least one of your three course choices by 17:00 BST on 8 July 2027 is a hard condition of the award. This is why you should apply to your universities early and keep admissions offices informed that you are a Chevening candidate.
7. Is there an age limit for Chevening?
No, there is no upper age limit. The binding constraints are the degree-timing rule (undergraduate studies finished at least two years before the deadline) and the 2,800 hours of post-degree work experience.
8. Can I stay in the UK after my Chevening master’s?
Chevening’s condition is that you return to your home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends. Apply only if you genuinely intend to honour that commitment — it is central to what the programme funds.
