Medicine Scholarships in the UK for International Students 2026
Every year, thousands of international students search for a “fully funded MBBS scholarship in the UK” β and every year, most of them are met by websites promising things that do not exist. So let us start with the truth, because your family’s money depends on it: there is no UK government scholarship that fully funds an undergraduate medical degree (MBBS / MBChB) for international students. Chevening does not cover it. Commonwealth Scholarships do not cover it. The NHS does not fund international undergraduates. Undergraduate medicine in the UK is one of the most expensive degrees in the world for an overseas student β five or six years of very high international tuition fees, clinical years often priced higher than pre-clinical years, in a system where places for international students are also capped by government β and genuine scholarship money at this level is scarce, small, and ferociously competitive.
That is the bad news, and any guide that hides it from you is not your friend. The good news is real, though, and it is what this article is actually about. First, a small number of medical schools do run genuine scholarships and fee discounts for international MBBS students β Brunel Medical School’s international scholarship is the best-known example β and we explain them with their real values. Second, the funding picture changes completely at postgraduate level: if your plan is a medical master’s, a research doctorate, or graduate study after a first degree, then Chevening, Commonwealth, Gates Cambridge, Rhodes and university awards become live options, and some of them are genuinely fully funded. Third, many families ultimately fund UK medicine through a deliberate plan β a medical-school discount here, careful choice of a lower-fee school there, and honest comparison against graduate-entry and non-UK routes β and this guide shows you how to build that plan with your eyes open. You will find the wider context in our scholarships directory, medical-school profiles in the universities directory, and the global overview in Medicine Scholarships for International Students 2026β2027.

Medicine Scholarships in the UK at a Glance
| Route / Award | Level | What it realistically offers | Key catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brunel Medical School International Scholarship | Undergraduate MBBS (Brunel, London) | A percentage fee discount in the most recent published terms (15% off the annual tuition fee per year of the 5-year course in the 2024-entry terms we checked); earlier intakes were offered Β£6,000 per year (Β£30,000 total) | Very small number of awards; merit-based; terms change per intake β verify |
| Individual medical-school discounts & international awards (e.g. new medical schools’ launch awards, Hull York-style percentage discounts) | Undergraduate MBBS | Small one-off or percentage tuition reductions β typically a few thousand pounds, or a modest % of one year’s fee | Helpful, never transformative; always check the school’s own fee/scholarship page |
| Chevening Scholarship | One-year taught Master’s only | Fully funded: tuition, flights, monthly stipend, visa costs | Does NOT fund MBBS or any undergraduate degree; 2 years’ work experience required |
| Commonwealth Master’s & PhD Scholarships | Postgraduate | Full funding for eligible Commonwealth citizens for master’s/PhD study, incl. health-related fields | Postgraduate only; country eligibility and nominating routes apply |
| Gates Cambridge / Rhodes / Clarendon | Postgraduate at Cambridge / Oxford | Full-cost graduate funding at two universities | Graduate study only β incl. graduate-entry or research routes, not a school-leaver MBBS |
| GREAT Scholarships | Postgraduate (one-year master’s, participating universities) | Minimum Β£10,000 towards tuition for students from listed countries | Postgraduate taught focus; country and university lists change yearly |
| NHS Bursary / UK student finance | β | Support for eligible home-fee students | Generally NOT available to international-fee-paying students |
Keep this table in mind whenever a site waves a “fully funded UK medicine scholarship” banner at you: if it does not name the level, the university and the exact award terms β and link to the university’s own page β it is marketing, not information.
First, Understand the Degree You Are Funding
UK undergraduate medicine is a five-year degree at most schools (six where an intercalated year is compulsory, as at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Edinburgh, among others), awarded as MBBS, MBChB or an equivalent primary medical qualification registrable with the General Medical Council. Admission is unlike any other subject. You apply through UCAS by the early medicine deadline β 15 October at 18:00 UK time in the year before entry, the same deadline as Oxford and Cambridge and dentistry (see UCAS dates and deadlines) β you may choose a maximum of four medical schools within your five UCAS choices, most schools require the UCAT admissions test taken in the summer before application, and selection ends in Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) or panel interviews. Academic entry requirements are set at the very top of school-leaving qualifications, and English requirements for medicine are typically higher than for other degrees β IELTS 7.0 or above is a common pattern, but each school sets its own.
Two funding consequences follow. The first is scale: multiply even the lower international fee levels by five or six years, add UKVI living-cost requirements for your visa (the official figures are on GOV.UK β Student visa money rules), and the total commitment is one of the largest a family will ever make. The second is timing: scholarship decisions at individual schools are usually made from the offer-holder pool, after UCAT and interviews β you cannot secure the funding first and apply second. Your application strategy and your funding strategy are the same strategy, built 12β18 months before entry.
Eligibility: Who Can Compete for What
- For undergraduate MBBS awards: you must be classified as an overseas (international) fee payer, hold or be predicted the grades the school requires, have sat the required admissions test (usually UCAT), and β crucially β hold an offer. Medical-school scholarships are overwhelmingly assessed from offer holders, often automatically or by a short additional application, and they reward the same things admission rewards: UCAT performance, interview (MMI) performance and academic record.
- Fee status is destiny. Almost all UK university funding splits by fee status. If you are assessed as an international fee payer, home-student schemes (NHS bursary, Student Finance England loans, most hardship and widening-access bursaries) are closed to you. Do not build a plan on them.
- For postgraduate medical funding: Chevening requires citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country, an undergraduate degree, at least two years’ (2,800 hours’) work experience, applications to three eligible one-year taught master’s courses and a commitment to return home for two years afterwards. Commonwealth awards require Commonwealth citizenship and follow country nomination/agency routes. Gates Cambridge and Rhodes are tied to admission to Cambridge and Oxford respectively and are judged on academic excellence plus leadership/service criteria set by each trust.
- Graduate-entry medicine (four-year programmes for existing graduates) is a separate admissions route β some schools use GAMSAT instead of UCAT β and it is still an undergraduate-level qualification for funding purposes: the big postgraduate scholarships do not fund it either. Treat any claim otherwise as a red flag until the scholarship’s own rules prove it.
The Real Undergraduate Options, School by School
Brunel Medical School (London) β the standout MBBS-specific award
Brunel Medical School, whose MBBS programme was designed for international as well as home students, runs the most substantial medicine-specific scholarship for international students that we can verify from published terms. In its earlier intakes Brunel offered a small number of prestigious awards worth Β£6,000 per year β Β£30,000 across the five-year course β as a tuition-fee waiver for overseas fee-paying offer holders, awarded on merit. In the more recent published terms we checked (2024 entry), the scheme was expressed as a 15% discount on the annual tuition fee for each year of the five-year course, subject to satisfactory progression, again for a very small number of international offer holders who had met their offer conditions and paid their deposit by the stated deadline. The lesson is not the exact number β it is that even the best MBBS-specific award in the UK covers a fraction of total fees, and its terms are republished per intake. Read the current terms on Brunel’s own scholarship pages before you rely on any figure, including ours.
New and smaller medical schools β launch awards and percentage discounts
A changing pattern worth watching: newly opened medical schools sometimes launch with international awards to build their first cohorts. The University of Hertfordshire’s new medical school, for example, launched a one-off Β£2,000 MBBS International Scholarship for its first September 2026 intake β automatic for eligible international entrants, first year only. Other schools have offered small percentage discounts on overseas fees (the Hull York pattern of a modest percentage of the fee per year is typical of the genre). None of these changes the fundamental arithmetic, but stacked with a lower base fee they can matter at the margin β and they reward applicants who read every target school’s scholarship page rather than only the famous names.
The famous universities β read the fine print
Students often assume Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, King’s and Edinburgh must have big MBBS scholarships. In reality their generous funding is concentrated at postgraduate level (Rhodes, Gates Cambridge, Clarendon β see below) and in general undergraduate awards that are either home-student schemes, extremely small, or not open to medicine. Where a general international undergraduate scholarship exists at a university with a medical school, check expressly whether medicine is an eligible course and whether clinical-year fees are included β exclusions are common. Profiles of two of the most searched are on StudyGraduate: the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.
Where the Fully Funded Money Actually Is: Postgraduate Medicine
If you already hold β or will hold β a first degree, the funding landscape transforms. Doctors, biomedical scientists and health professionals from around the world study in the UK every year on genuinely full scholarships, just not for a first MBBS.
Chevening (the UK government’s global scholarship, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) funds one-year taught master’s degrees in full β tuition, return flights, monthly living allowance, visa and arrival costs β including master’s in public health, epidemiology, health policy, medical sciences and many other medical-adjacent fields. Its rules are also the source of the most common misunderstanding in this whole topic: Chevening is for master’s study only, requires 2,800 hours of post-degree work experience, and cannot be used for an MBBS. Full rules: Chevening β official site, and our full guide is the Chevening Scholarship hub.
Commonwealth Scholarships fund master’s and PhD study for citizens of eligible Commonwealth countries, administered in the UK by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission β a realistic route for medical research doctorates and health master’s degrees, with development-impact criteria at their core. Gates Cambridge funds full-time postgraduate degrees at Cambridge at full cost for international applicants; Rhodes funds postgraduate study at Oxford for its constituency countries and is judged on academic excellence, energy to use talents fully, integrity and leadership; Clarendon at Oxford automatically considers graduate applicants across fields. For a qualified doctor aiming at a DPhil in clinical medicine, or a health researcher targeting an MSc plus PhD pathway, these are the awards that can genuinely pay for everything β tuition and living costs β and they are won on academic trajectory and references, prepared a year or more ahead.
Finally, do not overlook funded PhD studentships advertised by universities, UKRI doctoral training programmes (where international eligibility applies to a portion of places) and charities such as Wellcome for research in health β advertised studentships typically cover fees (sometimes at the home rate, with the university covering the international difference β always check) plus a tax-free stipend. This is research funding, not taught-degree funding, and it belongs in every academically strong medical graduate’s plan. Adjacent funding routes are mapped in our guide to Nursing Scholarships in the UK for International Students 2026β2027, which faces many of the same NHS-adjacent funding realities.

What UK Medicine Really Costs an International Student
| Budget line | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition β pre-clinical years | Set per school; international medicine fees are among the highest of any UK degree | Fees are published per intake on each school’s site; assume annual increases within the school’s stated policy |
| Tuition β clinical years | Frequently higher than pre-clinical years | Budget the clinical-year rate for years 3β5/6, not the year-1 headline |
| Living costs for visa purposes | The UKVI-required amounts on GOV.UK (higher in London) | These are minimums for the visa; real London costs exceed them |
| Immigration Health Surcharge | Payable per year of visa at the student rate in force | Multiply by the full course length β five or six years is a large sum |
| UCAT, UCAS, travel to interviews, GMC-related later costs | Smaller individually, real collectively | UCAT bursaries exist for eligible low-income candidates under UCAT’s own rules β check eligibility |
| Scholarship offset | MBBS-specific awards: typically a few thousand pounds per year or a modest percentage discount | Model your plan with zero scholarship first; treat any award as a bonus |
The discipline this table imposes is the single most valuable thing in this article: build the five-year budget at full price, confirm the family or sponsor financing for the full price, and only then let scholarships improve the picture. Medical schools will require a substantial deposit and evidence of funding, and your Student visa application requires evidence of the first year’s fees plus living costs under the GOV.UK rules β a hoped-for award is not evidence.
How to Apply: The Medicine Timeline, Step by Step
- 18β12 months out: Choose your degree strategy honestly β school-leaver MBBS, graduate-entry, or a first degree plus funded postgraduate route. Research up to a dozen medical schools; shortlist by fee level, UCAT usage (threshold vs. scored), international places and scholarship pages. Browse schools via the rankings directory but decide on primary sources.
- Prepare for UCAT: Most schools require it; testing runs in the summer before the October deadline. Use the official UCAT site for format, dates and bursary eligibility, and prepare with timed practice β UCAT is a speed test as much as a knowledge test. Our test preparation section covers the wider test landscape.
- Build experience: Clinical shadowing, care volunteering and reflection. Schools assess understanding of medicine as a career, not box-ticking hours.
- Write the personal statement: UCAS now uses structured questions; answer them with specific, reflected experience and motivation for medicine β never for a country or a salary.
- Submit UCAS by 15 October, 18:00 UK time: Maximum four medicine choices; your fifth choice can be a backup subject. Missing this deadline effectively costs a year.
- Interviews (roughly DecemberβMarch): MMIs test ethics, communication, teamwork and resilience. Practise aloud, with stations, not just by reading.
- Offers and scholarship steps (spring): As offers arrive, complete each school’s scholarship process exactly as instructed (some automatic, some by form or deposit deadline β Brunel’s terms, for instance, have tied eligibility to meeting conditions and paying the deposit on time). Compare net five-year cost, not year-one headlines.
- Firm choice, deposit, CAS and visa: Meet conditions, pay the deposit, receive your CAS, and apply for the Student visa with fee and living-cost evidence under GOV.UK rules. Then arrange accommodation and the Immigration Health Surcharge payment as part of the visa process.
Required Documents
- Passport and academic records: school-leaving certificates/transcripts meeting the school’s published requirements, plus predicted grades if final results are pending
- English-language evidence at the medical school’s required level (commonly IELTS 7.0+ patterns; school-specific)
- UCAT score (sent through the test system; know each school’s usage and any minimums)
- UCAS personal statement (structured questions) and academic reference
- Evidence of relevant experience for interview discussion (placements, volunteering β with reflection, not just certificates)
- For scholarship steps: offer letter, any school-specific scholarship form, and deposit payment by the school’s deadline where required
- For the visa: CAS, financial evidence per GOV.UK (fees + living costs, funds held for the required period), TB test certificate where your country is listed, and IHS payment
- Occupational-health and DBS-type checks are part of enrolment for medicine (fitness-to-practise requirements) β schools guide offer holders through them
Deadlines and Timeline
| When | Milestone | Notes |

| 15 Oct 2026, 18:00 UK | UCAS deadline for medicine (2027 entry) | Same deadline applies to international applicants; four medicine choices max |
| Dec 2026βMar 2027 | MMI / panel interviews | Some schools interview international applicants online or regionally β check each school |
| Spring 2027 | Offers; medical-school scholarship assessment among offer holders | Watch deposit deadlines attached to awards like Brunel’s |
| MayβAug 2027 | Meet conditions, CAS, Student visa application | Financial evidence rules are strict β funds must be held for the required consecutive period |
| AugβOct (postgraduate) | Chevening applications open in August and close in the autumn for the following year | Chevening 2027β28 closed 6 October 2026 β postgraduate applicants must plan a full cycle ahead |
| Sep 2027 | Course start | Most MBBS programmes start in September (a few in late August) |
Selection Criteria β How to Improve Your Chances
For admission and for the scholarships that follow from it, the hierarchy is consistent: examination performance that clears the school’s bar; a UCAT result competitive for that school’s international cohort (schools publish how they use UCAT β some rank by it, some threshold it, so a score that is weak at one school may be fine at another; choose your four choices after you know your score); an interview performance that shows empathy, ethical reasoning and communication under pressure; and a file that reads as a considered commitment to medicine rather than to emigration or prestige. For postgraduate full-funding competitions (Chevening, Gates, Rhodes, Commonwealth), add: a coherent career plan that uses the UK degree back home or in global health, leadership evidence with outcomes, and referees who can write specifically about your work. In both cases, honesty about money is itself a selection factor: schools need students who can complete a five-year degree; a credible funding plan is part of being a credible applicant.
Common Mistakes
- Believing in a fully funded MBBS scholarship advertised on social media. If the “scholarship” asks for an application fee to an agent, or cannot link to the university’s own page, it is a scam pattern. Universities do not sell scholarships through agents.
- Planning around Chevening/Commonwealth for undergraduate medicine. Both are postgraduate schemes. This single misunderstanding wastes more application seasons than any other.
- Applying to five medical schools. UCAS allows four medicine choices; the fifth must be a different subject.
- Missing 15 October. There is no late window for medicine.
- Budgeting year-one fees for five years. Clinical-year fees are higher and fees rise; model the whole degree.
- Choosing schools before knowing your UCAT score. Sequence matters: test first, then target schools whose UCAT usage suits your result. If you are also weighing sibling routes, compare with our guide to Law (LLM) Scholarships in the Netherlands for how different the funding maths can be in another system.
- Ignoring graduate and postgraduate pathways. A strong first degree plus funded UK postgraduate study is, for many families, the financially rational route into UK medicine and medical research.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fully funded scholarship for MBBS in the UK for international students?
Not from the UK government, and not as a general scheme. No Chevening, Commonwealth or NHS award funds an undergraduate medical degree for international students. The realistic undergraduate help is small medical-school awards and discounts (Brunel’s being the most substantial we can verify), so a credible plan must be built primarily on family/sponsor funding.
How much is the Brunel Medical School scholarship for international students?
Brunel’s published terms have changed between intakes: earlier intakes offered Β£6,000 per year (Β£30,000 over five years) to a small number of overseas offer holders, and the 2024-entry terms we checked expressed the award as a 15% discount on each year’s tuition fee, subject to progression. Always read the current intake’s terms on Brunel’s official site.
Can Chevening fund a medical degree?
Chevening funds one-year taught master’s degrees only. It can fund medical-related master’s study (public health, epidemiology, health policy, medical sciences and similar) for experienced graduates, but it cannot fund an MBBS at any level of entry.
What is the UCAS deadline for medicine, and how many schools can I choose?
15 October at 18:00 UK time in the year before entry, for all applicants including internationals, and you may choose a maximum of four medical schools among your five UCAS choices.
Do international medical students get the NHS bursary?
Generally, no. The NHS bursary and UK student finance are tied to home fee status and residence eligibility. International fee-paying students should assume they are self-funded apart from any university award.
Is UCAT required for all UK medical schools?
Most undergraduate medical schools require UCAT; some graduate-entry programmes use GAMSAT, and a small number use their own assessments. Check each target school’s admission page β and remember your UCAT result should drive which four schools you choose.
Can I work part-time to fund UK medicine?
Student visa holders can typically work limited hours in term time, but medicine is an intensive full-time course with clinical placements, and part-time earnings cannot responsibly fund international medical fees. Treat work as incidental income only, and check your visa conditions.
What is the cheaper realistic alternative if MBBS funding is impossible?
Options families actually use: a lower-fee UK medical school plus its discount schemes; graduate-entry medicine after a funded or home-country first degree; or a strong first degree followed by a fully funded UK postgraduate scholarship (Chevening, Commonwealth, Gates Cambridge, funded PhDs) in medicine-adjacent research. Each has trade-offs β compare total cost and recognition in the country where you intend to practise, including that country’s licensing exam.
