📖 Overview
Scholarships in UAE for International Students 2026/2027
The United Arab Emirates has quietly become one of the most generous scholarship destinations in the world for graduate study. While undergraduate funding in the Emirates is mostly partial and fiercely merit-based, postgraduate applicants — especially in engineering, artificial intelligence, science and medicine — can find genuinely fully funded packages that cover tuition, pay a monthly stipend, include accommodation or flights, and sponsor the student visa. For international students from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Nigeria, Indonesia and beyond, the UAE offers a distinctive combination: English-taught degrees, a safe and highly international environment, world-class laboratory infrastructure funded by sovereign investment, and campuses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Dubai and Sharjah that recruit globally.
This guide explains scholarships in the UAE for international students for the 2026/2027 cycle honestly and in detail. It covers the three routes that matter most — Khalifa University graduate scholarships in Abu Dhabi, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) scholarship, and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) scholarships in Al Ain — plus the wider landscape of university merit awards you should check. You will find verified stipend figures where the universities publish them, clear warnings where figures vary by tier or year, eligibility rules, documents, deadlines, and practical advice on building a competitive application. You can also browse the full StudyGraduate scholarships directory to compare the UAE with other destinations before you commit.
A word of realism before the detail. UAE scholarships are competitive and they are not automatic. Meeting a minimum GPA does not guarantee an award, funded places are limited, and several of the most generous packages — particularly at doctoral level — can involve a work commitment after graduation. Read each university’s current scholarship page carefully, apply early, and treat every figure in this guide as a figure to re-confirm on the official site for your exact intake.

Scholarships in the UAE at a Glance
The table below summarises the main scholarship routes covered in this guide. Amounts are the published figures verified at the time of writing; where a university awards funding in tiers, the table shows the structure rather than a single number, because your tier depends on your grades and the strength of the applicant pool.
| Scholarship | University / Host | Level | Main Coverage | Key Deadline Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khalifa University Graduate Scholarship | Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi | Master’s and PhD | Tiered tuition waiver up to 100%; top PhD tiers add stipend, accommodation, insurance, flights and visa fees | Intake-based admission rounds; check the postgraduate admissions calendar |
| MBZUAI Scholarship | Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Abu Dhabi | MSc and PhD in AI fields | 100% tuition for funded students; monthly stipend AED 15,500 (international MSc) / AED 17,500 (international PhD); health insurance; annual airfare; visa sponsorship | 15 December 2026 for most Fall 2027 programmes |
| UAEU Undergraduate Scholarships | United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain | Bachelor’s | Tuition discount of 100%, 75% or 50% by merit tier; tuition only — living costs are not covered | Applications in May–July (first semester) and September–November (second semester) |
| UAEU Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships | United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain | Master’s and PhD | PhD scholarships, fellowships and research/teaching assistantships; coverage varies by award | Programme admission rounds; check UAEU graduate admissions |
| University merit awards (various) | Universities in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi | Mainly bachelor’s and master’s | Partial tuition discounts, commonly merit-based; percentages and renewal rules vary by institution | Set by each university; usually tied to admission |
Two structural points explain most of the UAE system. First, the biggest money is at graduate level, because the Emirates is investing in research capacity: doctoral and research master’s students are funded as part of a national strategy in energy, aerospace, robotics, health and artificial intelligence. Second, almost every UAE scholarship is awarded through admission — there is usually no separate scholarship application form. You apply for the degree, you are assessed for admission, and funding is decided on the same file. That means your admission application is your scholarship application, and it must be excellent in every section.
Why Study in the UAE?
Cost is the obvious starting point: a funded offer in Abu Dhabi can be worth more, in cash terms, than most scholarships in Europe, because stipends at the top doctoral tiers are high and income tax on the stipend is not a feature of the UAE system. But money is not the only reason students choose the Emirates. Degrees are taught in English at the major research universities. The student population is exceptionally international, so a Bangladeshi, Indian, Nigerian or Indonesian student joins a genuinely global cohort rather than a small minority. The infrastructure is new: laboratories, computing clusters and libraries at Khalifa University and MBZUAI were built recently with substantial funding, which matters enormously in experimental and computational fields.
There are also practical advantages. Flights from South Asia and East Africa to Abu Dhabi and Dubai are short and frequent compared with transatlantic routes, time-zone differences are modest for family contact, halal food and places of worship are universally available, and the UAE consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world for residents. Against that, be honest about the trade-offs: Abu Dhabi and Dubai are not cheap cities if you are self-funding, summer heat is intense, and part-time work on a student residence visa is restricted — you should never build a funding plan that depends on casual employment. A scholarship that covers your core costs is therefore not a luxury in the UAE; for most international students it is the plan itself.
Khalifa University Graduate Scholarships
Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s flagship science and engineering university, formed around petroleum, aerospace and research institutes. Its graduate scholarships are the broadest fully funded route in the country for international master’s and PhD students outside the single field of AI. Full details are published on the official Khalifa University postgraduate scholarships page, and you should treat that page as the controlling source for your intake.
How the Khalifa tier system works
Khalifa awards graduate scholarships in tiers. The published tier structure for graduate study works broadly as follows: Tier I provides a 100% tuition fee waiver; Tier II provides a 75% tuition waiver and, for full-time students, a monthly stipend (a figure of AED 2,000 per month has been published for this tier); Tier III provides a 50% tuition waiver; and Tier IV provides a 25% tuition waiver. Across the tiers, eligible full-time students can also receive benefits such as free university accommodation, textbooks, medical insurance sponsored by the university, support to attend international research conferences (subject to approval), mobilisation and demobilisation flights between the home country and Abu Dhabi, and coverage of UAE visa application fees. The exact bundle attached to each tier, and the stipend amounts for research-path doctoral scholars, are set out on the official page — check them for your programme, because Khalifa distinguishes between scholarship categories and between full-time and part-time study.
Doctoral funding deserves a specific note. Khalifa’s PhD scholarship packages for research students have included a basic monthly stipend of AED 20,000 with the possibility of an additional monthly allowance of up to AED 20,000, subject to approval and to meeting scholarship progression criteria. That is an exceptional package by global standards, and it comes with an equally serious condition that appears in Khalifa’s published terms: recipients can be required to commit to work with Khalifa University or a nominated entity after graduation for a period equivalent to the period of study, and the university reserves the right not to offer a post. Read that commitment carefully before you accept. A scholarship with a service obligation can be an excellent deal — it can mean a guaranteed research job — but it is a contract, not a gift, and you should understand exactly what you are signing.
Khalifa eligibility
For master’s admission, Khalifa expects a relevant bachelor’s degree with a strong cumulative GPA — a minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 is the published admission floor for master’s programmes, and scholarship tiers reward substantially higher grades. For PhD admission, applicants normally hold a master’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.25 out of 4.0, or apply for direct bachelor-to-PhD entry with a considerably higher bachelor’s CGPA (3.5 out of 4.0 has been published for that route). English proficiency must be demonstrated, with published thresholds including IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 91, or an EmSAT English score of 1550. PhD applicants submit a research statement of 500–1,000 words, all applicants submit a statement of purpose, two referee recommendations are required, a GRE quantitative score (150 has been published as a minimum where GRE is required) may be requested, and shortlisted applicants attend an admission interview. Because tier placement is merit-driven, two admitted students on the same programme can receive very different funding — your grades, research record and interview are what move you up the tiers.
MBZUAI Scholarships: Full Funding for Artificial Intelligence
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, is the world’s first graduate-level, research-based university dedicated entirely to AI. If your field is machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, computer science, statistics and data science, or computational biology, MBZUAI belongs on your shortlist alongside the best-funded AI programmes anywhere. Funding information is published on the official MBZUAI fees and scholarships page.
What the MBZUAI scholarship pays
For funded students, MBZUAI covers 100% of tuition and pays a monthly stipend. The published stipend rates for international students are AED 15,500 per month for MSc students and AED 17,500 per month for PhD students. UAE nationals receive higher rates (AED 37,500 and AED 43,500 respectively), which is why you sometimes see larger figures quoted online — make sure any figure you rely on is the international rate. The funded package also includes health insurance, a university-sponsored UAE residence visa and Emirates ID where eligible, and one return airfare to the home country each year. On-campus accommodation is available at a published monthly fee of around AED 7,500, which students pay from the stipend — so budget honestly: the stipend is generous, but housing in the university’s accommodation consumes a significant share of it.
Two funding subtleties matter. First, the funding model differs by level: doctoral funding is university-supported from the first year and then transitions to the faculty advisor’s funding once an advisor match is confirmed, while MSc funding is competitive and is typically secured through a faculty-sponsored research or teaching assistantship or another approved route. In plain terms, PhD funding at MBZUAI is a core part of the offer, whereas MSc applicants should not assume that admission automatically means full funding in every case — confirm the funding attached to your specific offer letter. Second, the professional Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) is a fee-based programme and is excluded from the scholarship model. If you hold an outside scholarship, you must disclose it, and it normally replaces rather than adds to the university stipend.
MBZUAI eligibility and deadlines
MBZUAI requires a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field — computer science, electrical or computer engineering, mathematics, physics, data science or a related discipline — from an accredited university recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education. A minimum CGPA of 3.2 out of 4.0 is published for MSc admission; PhD applicants need either a bachelor’s with a CGPA of 3.5 plus evidence of doctoral readiness, or bachelor’s and master’s degrees with a CGPA of 3.2 or above. English thresholds are TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS Academic 6.5, or EmSAT English 1550, with certificates within their validity windows. GRE is mandatory in some direct-entry doctoral cases and optional but recommended elsewhere. Applicants submit a statement of purpose of around 800 words, a CV, and two recommendation letters (three for some doctoral routes), and must pass a screening examination and a technical interview. For the Fall 2027 intake, the application portal opened on 7 September 2026 and the final deadline for most programmes is 15 December 2026 at 5 p.m. Gulf Standard Time, with decisions expected by 31 March 2027; the MAAI deadline is later, on 28 February 2027. Only one application per cycle is processed, so choose your programme with care. United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) Scholarships
UAEU in Al Ain is the UAE’s oldest and most comprehensive public university, with colleges spanning humanities, science, engineering, medicine, law, business, agriculture and education. It is the main UAE option for undergraduate scholarship seekers and for graduate students outside Khalifa’s engineering focus. The official rules are published on the UAEU undergraduate scholarships page.
Undergraduate scholarships at UAEU
UAEU’s undergraduate scholarships for international students are tuition discounts awarded to new students with outstanding school results, in three tiers: a 100% tuition waiver, a 75% tuition discount, and a 50% tuition discount. The published academic thresholds are demanding: a Grade 12 (general secondary certificate) score of at least 98% is associated with the full tuition tier, 97% with the 75% tier, and 95% with the 50% tier, alongside English proficiency requirements that reach IELTS 7.5 for the top tier (with lower thresholds, from IELTS 6.5, at the other tiers and variations by college, including different requirements for Law). Mathematics requirements apply for science-based colleges, expressed through EmSAT or SAT Math scores. Two warnings are essential. First, these scholarships cover tuition only — accommodation, food, transport and insurance are your own cost, and Al Ain living costs must be budgeted separately. Second, the award is conditional and seat-limited: UAEU states explicitly that meeting the criteria does not constitute an entitlement or guarantee, because scholarships are awarded subject to the availability of allocated seats. To keep the scholarship you must maintain a high GPA (published renewal thresholds are in the 3.6–3.8 range depending on tier) and complete at least 15 credit hours per regular semester. Applications follow the admission calendar, with windows in May, June and July for the first semester and September, October and November for the second semester, and your school certificate generally must not be older than one year at application.
Graduate funding at UAEU
At graduate level, UAEU supports students through a mix of PhD scholarships open to all nationalities, a Chancellor’s Fellowship, and graduate research, teaching and administrative assistantships tied to funded projects and departments. Coverage varies significantly by award — some doctoral packages are comprehensive, while assistantships pay for defined work on a research project. Because the structure changes with research funding cycles, treat UAEU’s graduate studies pages as the source of truth, identify the specific award or assistantship attached to your programme, and ask the college directly what the package includes before you rely on it.
Other Universities and Merit Awards in the UAE
Beyond the big three, many UAE universities — including institutions in Dubai’s academic zones, Sharjah, and private universities in Abu Dhabi — offer merit scholarships, academic excellence discounts, and sibling or early-application tuition reductions. These are typically partial tuition discounts (often in the 10–50% range) awarded at admission and renewed on GPA conditions. They can make a self-funded UAE degree workable, but they rarely convert an unaffordable degree into a free one, because living costs remain. When you evaluate a private-university discount, ask four questions: What percentage is guaranteed in writing, and for how many years? What GPA keeps it, and what happens in a semester when you fall below? Does it apply to the full tuition or only to part of the fee structure? And what is the total cost of attendance — tuition after discount plus housing, food, insurance and flights — for the whole degree? Compare the answers with funded routes abroad in the StudyGraduate universities directory and with country costs using the tools in the StudyGraduate tools section.
Eligibility: The Common Requirements
Although each UAE university sets its own rules, international scholarship applicants in 2026/2027 should expect the following common requirements. An accredited prior degree or school certificate recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education — foreign qualifications typically need equivalency or attestation through the Ministry’s process, so start document legalisation early. A GPA comfortably above the published minimum for your programme, because scholarships are allocated competitively above the admission floor. Proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL or EmSAT) within its validity period, unless you qualify for a published exemption. A passport valid well beyond your intended start date. For research degrees, a statement of purpose and, at doctoral level, a research statement that aligns with the university’s active research groups. Referees who know your academic work and will submit on time. And for MBZUAI, readiness for a screening examination and technical interview that test the mathematics and programming foundations of AI study — this is a genuine filter, not a formality.

Programmes and Fields of Study
Khalifa University’s funded graduate portfolio sits in its colleges of engineering, computing and mathematical sciences, and medicine and health sciences: programmes include chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, petroleum, nuclear and biomedical engineering, robotics, information security, applied chemistry, petroleum geoscience, materials science, and the Doctor of Medicine. MBZUAI is deliberately narrow and deep: MSc and PhD programmes in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, computer science, statistics and data science, and computational biology, plus the fee-based professional Master in Applied AI. UAEU offers the broadest spread, from engineering, science and medicine to law, business, humanities, education and agriculture and veterinary medicine, at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels. The practical lesson is to match the institution to the field first and the scholarship second: a fully funded offer in the wrong research area is worth less than a well-matched programme, because your supervisor fit and research output determine your next decade.
How to Apply, Step by Step
- Choose the programme and university first. Shortlist one Khalifa, MBZUAI or UAEU programme that fits your degree background and research interests. At MBZUAI you may submit only one application per cycle, so this choice is final for the year.
- Read the official scholarship page for your intake. Record the tier structure, stipend, English thresholds, and any work-commitment or renewal conditions. Save the page — terms are updated between cycles.
- Check degree recognition early. Confirm your university and degree are recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education and begin attestation or equivalency if required. This is the step that most often delays otherwise strong applicants.
- Book and take your English test in time. IELTS and TOEFL scores must be valid at application. EmSAT is available to applicants inside the UAE system. Leave time for one retake.
- Prepare your statement and research documents. Write a specific statement of purpose: name the research groups, projects or facilities you are targeting and explain the fit. Doctoral applicants should align the research statement with a plausible supervisor’s published work.
- Secure referees early. Ask two (or three) academics who can describe your research potential concretely, give them your CV and statement, and confirm they can meet the deadline.
- Complete the online application completely. Upload transcripts, degree certificates, passport, CV, test scores and statements exactly in the formats requested. At Khalifa, ensure you select the correct scholarship or graduate research/teaching assistantship consideration option where the form asks.
- Prepare for examination and interview. MBZUAI applicants should revise linear algebra, probability, algorithms and programming for the screening exam. Khalifa doctoral applicants should be ready to defend their research statement in interview.
- Track the portal and respond fast. Offers, funding letters and visa paperwork run on deadlines. Read your funding letter line by line — tier, stipend, accommodation, flights, and conditions — before accepting.
- Arrange visa, insurance and travel only on instruction. Your university sponsors the student residence process; do not buy non-refundable tickets before your entry permit is confirmed.
Required Documents
Expect to provide: a valid passport; certified degree certificates and full academic transcripts (with certified English translations where applicable); proof of English proficiency; a CV covering research, projects, publications and work experience; a statement of purpose; a research statement for PhD applications; two or three recommendation letters submitted through the university’s system; GRE scores where required or recommended; a passport-style photograph; and, for applicants already resident in the UAE, copies of residence visa and Emirates ID. UAEU undergraduate applicants additionally need their Grade 12 certificate and subject test scores (EmSAT or SAT/ACT equivalents as specified by college). Keep a single folder of high-quality scans, named clearly — sloppy document preparation is an unforced error in a competitive pool.
Deadlines and Timeline
| When | What Happens | Your Action |
|---|---|---|
| September 2026 | MBZUAI Fall 2027 portal opens (7 September); UAEU second-semester undergraduate window runs September–November | Submit MBZUAI early if ready; finalise UAEU undergraduate files |
| October–November 2026 | Khalifa intake rounds progress for upcoming terms; supervisor outreach season for doctoral applicants | Contact prospective supervisors; complete English tests |
| 15 December 2026, 5 p.m. GST | MBZUAI final deadline for most Fall 2027 programmes | Application, references and documents fully submitted before the deadline |
| January–February 2027 | Screening examinations and interviews; MAAI deadline 28 February 2027 | Prepare for technical screening; monitor email daily |
| By 31 March 2027 | MBZUAI decisions expected for most programmes | Compare funding letters carefully before accepting |
| May–July 2027 | UAEU first-semester undergraduate application window | Apply with final Grade 12 results as soon as they are issued |
| August 2027 | Fall semester begins at MBZUAI and other UAE universities | Complete visa, medical and Emirates ID steps on arrival as instructed |
Khalifa University runs intake-based admission rather than one single annual deadline, and UAEU graduate rounds follow college calendars, so verify the exact closing date for your programme and term on the official admissions pages. Where a 2027 date has not yet been published for a route, the pattern above reflects the most recent published cycle — plan to the same months and confirm.
How Selection Works and How to Improve Your Chances
UAE scholarship selection rewards three things: academic excellence well above the minimum, demonstrable research fit, and completeness. Committees fund students who look ready to produce research from the first semester. To improve your chances, raise the parts of the file you control. Keep or build a strong GPA and be ready to explain any weak semester honestly and briefly. Gain research evidence — a final-year project with real results, a research internship, a workshop paper, or open-source and competition work in AI for MBZUAI applicants. Write statements that are specific to the institution: reference actual laboratories, centres and faculty research themes rather than generic praise of the UAE. Choose referees for credibility, not seniority alone; a detailed letter from a supervisor who watched you do research beats a one-line letter from a famous name. Apply in the early part of the window where the university allows it, because funded seats are allocated as cohorts fill. Finally, treat the interview and screening exam as part of the scholarship competition, because they are: revise fundamentals, practise explaining your project in ten minutes, and know why your research belongs at that university.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake is quoting the wrong stipend: students repeat UAE-national MBZUAI rates or headline doctoral figures as if they applied to every master’s applicant. Use the international rate for your level and tier. The second mistake is assuming admission equals funding — at MBZUAI, MSc funding depends on the approved funding route, and at Khalifa your tier is decided competitively. Third, applicants ignore the conditions: Khalifa doctoral packages can carry a post-study work commitment, UAEU undergraduate awards vanish if your GPA or credit load slips, and outside scholarships at MBZUAI replace rather than stack with the stipend. Fourth, students start degree attestation and equivalency too late and miss intake windows. Fifth, they apply to the fee-based MAAI expecting scholarship coverage that the programme explicitly excludes. Sixth, they budget only tuition and forget that UAEU undergraduate scholarships do not pay for housing or living costs in Al Ain. Avoid these, and your application is already ahead of a large share of the pool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are scholarships in the UAE fully funded?
Some are, mainly at graduate level. Funded MBZUAI students receive full tuition, a monthly stipend, insurance, visa sponsorship and annual airfare. Top Khalifa graduate tiers can cover tuition in full plus accommodation, insurance, flights and, for research doctoral scholars, a substantial stipend. UAEU undergraduate scholarships, by contrast, cover tuition only. Always judge a specific offer by its funding letter, not by the phrase “fully funded” online.
What stipend do international students get at MBZUAI?
The published international rates are AED 15,500 per month for MSc students and AED 17,500 per month for PhD students. Higher figures you may see (AED 37,500 and AED 43,500) are the rates for UAE nationals. On-campus accommodation costs about AED 7,500 per month and is paid from the stipend. Confirm the rate in your offer letter.
Can I study a bachelor’s degree in the UAE on scholarship?
Yes, but expect partial, merit-based tuition discounts rather than full living-cost packages. UAEU’s international undergraduate scholarships waive 100%, 75% or 50% of tuition for students with Grade 12 scores of roughly 98%, 97% or 95% respectively, plus high English scores, and private universities offer smaller merit discounts. You must fund living costs yourself.
Do I need IELTS to apply for UAE scholarships?
Almost always, unless you qualify for a published exemption. Typical thresholds are IELTS Academic 6.5 with TOEFL iBT 90–91 or EmSAT English 1550 at Khalifa and MBZUAI for graduate study, rising to IELTS 7.5 for UAEU’s top undergraduate tier. Check your programme’s exact requirement and the validity window for scores.
Is there an age limit for UAE scholarships?
The main programmes in this guide do not publish a general age limit for international graduate applicants, but programme-specific rules can change. What matters more in practice is academic recency and progression — for example, UAEU undergraduate scholarships expect a recent Grade 12 certificate, generally no older than one year. Verify any age or recency rule on the official page for your route.
Can I work part-time in the UAE on a student visa?
Do not build your budget on part-time work. Student residence and work permissions in the UAE are regulated and restrictive, and scholarship conditions may also limit outside commitments. Funded students are expected to be present and focused on campus — MBZUAI states this expectation explicitly for funded students. Treat any permitted work as a bonus, never as core funding.
When should I apply for the 2026/2027 cycle?
For MBZUAI Fall 2027, the portal opened on 7 September 2026 and most programmes close on 15 December 2026. For Khalifa, apply in the published round for your target intake and programme. For UAEU undergraduate entry, the windows are May–July and September–November. In every case, begin document attestation and English testing at least three months before the deadline.
Does a UAE scholarship guarantee my visa?
No. Your university sponsors the student residence process, and funded packages may cover visa fees, but the residence permit itself is issued by the UAE authorities and depends on your documents, medical screening and eligibility. No university or guide can guarantee a visa decision.
