π Overview
McMaster University Scholarships for International Students 2026/27
McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, puts serious money behind international undergraduates: the university publishes over $20 million in awards for international fee-paying undergraduate students, with individual packages ranging from a few thousand dollars to an Award of Excellence worth up to $200,000 over four years. But McMaster’s system is structured differently from most Canadian universities, and students who do not understand the structure leave money unclaimed. In outline: there is one prestigious award you must apply for, a set of faculty-specific automatic awards that pay you based on your admission average and your faculty, and a layer of in-course and graduate awards that open up after you arrive. Which faculty you choose β Business, Engineering, Humanities, Science or Social Sciences β changes your scholarship outcome as much as your grades do.
This guide walks through every layer with the values McMaster itself publishes, including the automatic DeGroote School of Business tiers, the Engineering and Computer Science entrance awards, and graduate funding through the School of Graduate Studies. Read it alongside our McMaster University profile for programs and Hamilton living costs, and our scholarships in Canada guide for the national picture.

Three eligibility conditions run underneath almost every undergraduate award in this guide, published by McMaster’s Registrar: you must be paying international tuition fees, enrolled full-time in the fall and winter terms, and you must clear the conditions of your offer and finalise your admission. If your tuition status changes to domestic fees, you stop being eligible for international awards. Students entering through the MELD language program in 2026/27 become eligible for these awards once they successfully complete MELD and enrol in a Level I program in 2027/28. Keep those conditions in view: they explain most “my scholarship disappeared” stories, which are usually enrolment or fee-status changes, not university errors.
The Award You Must Apply For: McMaster University Award of Excellence
The McMaster University Award of Excellence is the university’s prestigious entrance award for international students, valued at up to $200,000 over four years. It is presented to a student who exemplifies the highest standards of academic and personal achievement: a strong history of academic excellence, a demonstrated commitment to community, and clear potential as a student scholar at McMaster, reflecting the university’s values of excellence, engagement and personal growth. It is open across the faculties of Business, Engineering, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences.
Unlike the automatic awards below, this one requires a deliberate application through AwardSpring. For the 2026/27 cycle published on McMaster’s future-students pages, the application opens November 1, 2026 and closes February 19, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. ET. (MELD applicants use a dedicated Award of Excellence form instead.) Applications are evaluated on three reflective criteria: Personal Growth and Achievement β a meaningful learning experience and what you gained from it; Community Engagement and Contribution β the positive impact you have made by helping others; and Self-Reflection β insight into your personal values, choices or goals. This is an essay competition about a life actually lived, not a grades re-ranking, and it should be written like one: specific experiences, honest reflection, no generic leadership vocabulary.
Two technical points matter. First, award amounts are determined by the faculty and are based on your enrolled course load as required by your program; the final value is confirmed following enrolment. “Up to $200,000” is therefore a ceiling across the award family, not a standard package β the Faculty of Engineering, for example, lists its Award of Excellence stream at $35,000 Γ 4 years, with five available, for incoming Level 1 Engineering, Computer Science, Bachelor of Technology and iBioMed students. Second, the award is renewable each year in Levels 2β4 only if you remain enrolled in the faculty to which you were originally admitted, maintain full-time enrolment, and continue paying international tuition fees. Changing faculties mid-degree can end your award β a fact to weigh before any program switch.
The Automatic Awards: Your Faculty Decides Your Tier
DeGroote School of Business β A Published Three-Tier Ladder
DeGroote is the clearest example of McMaster’s faculty-tier system, with three automatic awards established in 2024, none requiring an application. The Dean’s Global Excellence Award recognises averages of 95% or higher: $25,000 in the first year, renewable at $20,000 per year for up to three further years β a potential $85,000 over a degree. The DeGroote International Distinction Award covers averages of 90 to 94.99%: $20,000 in year one, renewable at $10,000 per year for up to three years (up to $50,000 total). The DeGroote International Scholars Award covers averages of 89.99% or below: $15,000 in year one, renewable at $5,000 per year for up to three years (up to $30,000 total). Renewal in each case requires remaining enrolled in the DeGroote School of Business and in good standing. Note what the ladder rewards: a student at 94.99% and a student at 95% have nearly identical grades but a $35,000 difference in potential award value across the degree. If you are near a boundary in your final school term, that boundary is worth real money β finish your final exams accordingly.
Engineering, Computer Science and iBioMed β $10,000 Automatic Entrance Awards
The Faculty of Engineering runs a cluster of one-time automatic awards for international students entering Level 1 full-time in the fall and paying international fees: the Engineering International Entrance Award ($10,000, Engineering 1), the iBioMed International Entrance Award ($10,000, Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences) and the Computer Science International Entrance Award ($10,000, Computer Science 1 or Computer Science 1 Co-op). Alongside them sits the renewable Global Dean’s Excellence Award for Engineering β listed at $7,500 over four years, renewable in good academic standing, by application β and, within the AwardSpring engineering application, the renewable Dean’s Global Distinction Award at $7,500 Γ 4 years. Engineering applicants complete one application to be considered for all eligible Faculty of Engineering entrance scholarships; for Fall 2027 that application closes February 19, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with reference letters due by February 21, 2027. If you hold an Engineering offer and skip AwardSpring, you are volunteering to be considered for only half the faculty’s money.
Humanities, Science, Social Sciences and MELD
In the Faculty of Humanities, the Humanities Scholars Award is automatic for international Level 1 entrants with an average of 85% or above: $10,000 in Level 1, renewable at $5,000 per year in Levels 2β4 while you remain in a Humanities Honours program in good standing. Students below 85% are not left with nothing: the Faculty of Humanities Global Gateway Award is a one-time $2,500 award for full-time international entrants with an incoming average below 85%. In the Faculty of Science, the Science Global Scholars Award pays $10,000 in Level 1 and renews at $7,500 per year in Levels 2β4 for students who remain in a Faculty of Science program in good standing and meet the published terms. And for students arriving through the MELD diploma program, two one-time entrance scholarships reward final admission averages at the point of Level 1 entry: $5,000 at 93% or above, and $3,500 between 90 and 92.99%. Social Sciences students compete principally through the Award of Excellence and in-course awards; check the faculty’s own pages in your cycle, because faculty award families are revised more often than university-wide ones.

A Note on Names: McMaster Is Not McCall MacBain
Every year, applicants confuse two different things because the names sound alike. The McCall MacBain Scholarship is a fully funded graduate scholarship at McGill University in Montreal β it has nothing to do with McMaster. McMaster’s flagship is the Award of Excellence described above, an undergraduate entrance award. The confusion runs the other way too: McMaster appears in McCall MacBain conversations because McMaster graduates are eligible to apply to McCall MacBain for a master’s degree at McGill later, and because McMaster students regularly reach the finalist stages of national awards. If a website tells you that McMaster offers a “McCall MacBain full scholarship for undergraduates,” it is wrong on both axes β wrong university, wrong level. Similarly, the Schulich Leader Scholarships sometimes listed beside McMaster are a national STEM entrance competition administered externally and tenable at partner universities, with school nomination required: if you are a Canadian-school STEM applicant, ask your school counsellor about nomination, and verify values and deadlines on the Schulich Leaders official site rather than relying on any university guide, including this one.
In-Course Awards and Need-Based Support
Entrance awards are only the first layer. McMaster’s Registrar confirms that international students can apply for the same in-course awards as domestic students β awards for full- and part-time undergraduates who are not in their graduating year, some open across all faculties and others specific to a faculty, program or year of study. Your personal award list will therefore differ from your friends’, and it grows as you progress: strong Level 2 and Level 3 students with a defined program and faculty standing are eligible for awards that simply do not exist at entrance. The working habit to build in first year is simple β log into the awards system each fall and winter, read your personalised list, and apply to everything you genuinely qualify for. Separately, McMaster operates bursary and financial-aid routes assessed on need; these are administered through the Registrar’s aid and awards services and are distinct from the merit awards in this guide. Treat bursaries as a genuine but secondary layer: apply with complete financial documentation, and do not build an enrolment decision on an unassessed hope.
Graduate Scholarships at McMaster
Graduate funding at McMaster runs through the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and your department, and its biggest competitions are federal and provincial. The SGS publishes application windows for its scholarship rounds β for example, Fall 2026 applications ran September 1 to October 2, 2026, with Winter 2027 (January 4 to February 1, 2027) and Spring/Summer 2027 (May 3 to June 1, 2027) windows following. The awards every international graduate applicant should understand are these:
| Graduate award | Value | Key eligibility for international students |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Graduate Research Scholarship β Doctoral (CGRS-D) | $40,000 per year for 3 years | Open to international students who are enrolled in their doctoral program at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application; McMaster internal deadline typically end of September/early October |
| Canada Graduate Research Scholarship β Master’s (CGRS-M) | $27,000 for 1 year | Restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons β international students are not eligible; minimum GPA 10/12 (Aβ, 80%) in the last two years; deadline December 1, 2026 |
| Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) / QEII-GSST | $5,000 per term, for two or three terms in an academic year | First-class average (Aβ, 80%, 10/12 at McMaster) in each of the last two completed years for students entering their first or second year of graduate study in 2027β28; administered through the university β confirm the international-student stream and quota with SGS |
| Departmental and SGS graduate scholarships and bursaries | Varies by award | Applied for in the SGS published windows; many graduate bursaries and named awards are listed in the McMaster scholarships database |
Note the standing national update, because outdated guides still get it wrong: the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship has been discontinued, and CGRS-D β $40,000 per year for three years β is its doctoral successor. A second honesty point: research master’s and PhD funding at McMaster is typically assembled as a departmental package (scholarships plus teaching and research assistantships) and there is no single university-wide guaranteed figure published for all programs. Your offer letter and your department’s funding letter are the authoritative documents; ask for them in writing before you accept, and ask specifically which components are guaranteed, for how many years, and under what academic-standing conditions.
How to Apply, Step by Step
- Apply for admission through OUAC to your chosen McMaster program, and complete any required supplementary application for competitive programs such as Health Sciences, Engineering or Computer Science.
- Activate your Mosaic account and check AwardSpring access. Your AwardSpring login uses your Mosaic credentials, and it can take a few business days after applying and activating Mosaic for your profile to connect β do not leave this to deadline week.
- Note your automatic awards. Based on your faculty and admission average, you will be assessed automatically for the DeGroote tiers, Humanities Scholars, Engineering/iBioMed/CS entrance awards and similar awards. No form is needed β but your final grades must reach McMaster for the tiers to be calculated.
- Apply for the Award of Excellence via AwardSpring between November 1, 2026 and February 19, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET). Write the three reflective components β personal growth and achievement, community engagement and contribution, self-reflection β as evidence-based essays, and submit early enough that technical problems are recoverable.
- Engineering applicants: complete the single Faculty of Engineering scholarship application in AwardSpring by February 19, 2027, and warn your two referees that their reference letters are due by February 21, 2027.
- Finalise your offer conditions and maintain full-time enrolment in your admitted faculty β your international awards depend on both.
- Budget and study permit: for the federal proof-of-funds requirement, IRCC’s living-expenses figure for a single applicant outside Quebec (McMaster is in Ontario) is CAD 22,895 for applications to August 31, 2026 and CAD 23,448 from September 1, 2026, in addition to tuition. Confirmed award offers can form part of your financial picture; unconfirmed hopes cannot.
Required Documents
- OUAC admission application and final school transcripts showing your admission average (automatic award tiers are calculated from it).
- Supplementary application materials for your program, where required.
- Award of Excellence application in AwardSpring: reflective written responses on personal growth and achievement, community engagement, and self-reflection.
- Engineering scholarship application: activities, awards, extracurricular and work/volunteer experience, three short-answer responses, and two referees’ contact details for reference letters.
- Proof of English proficiency meeting McMaster’s requirements, unless exempt.
- Graduate applicants: transcripts, references, statement of interest and program documents per SGS and departmental instructions.

Selection Criteria and How to Improve Your Chances
McMaster’s money splits into two games. The automatic game is arithmetic: your admission average and your faculty determine your tier, and the only lever you control is your final grades β which is why the difference between 94.99% and 95% at DeGroote is worth up to $35,000 in potential value across a degree, and the difference between 84% and 85% in Humanities is worth up to $25,000. If you are within a point or two of a published threshold in your final term, treat every remaining assessment as a scholarship application, because it is one. The applied game β the Award of Excellence and the Engineering scholarship application β is evidence and reflection: documented community impact, growth you can narrate honestly, and referees who can corroborate it. Committees read for specificity. “Volunteered at a hospital” is a claim; two years of named responsibility, a problem you noticed, what you changed and what changed in you β that is a case. Start the AwardSpring essays in November, not February, and give referees at least three weeks.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming the Award of Excellence is automatic. It is not β it requires an AwardSpring application by February 19, 2027. The automatic awards are the faculty tiers.
- Confusing McMaster with McCall MacBain. McCall MacBain is McGill’s graduate scholarship. McMaster’s flagship undergraduate award is the Award of Excellence.
- Quoting “$200,000” as your expected package. It is a ceiling; amounts are faculty-determined and confirmed after enrolment based on your course load. Engineering’s listed stream is $35,000 Γ 4 years.
- Changing faculty without checking your award. Award of Excellence renewal requires staying in your original faculty, full-time, on international fees.
- Late AwardSpring access. Mosaic-to-AwardSpring connection can take a few business days. Activate accounts in November.
- Referees missing February 21. Engineering references have their own deadline two days after yours; brief your referees when you apply, not after.
- Graduate applicants citing Vanier or applying for CGRS-M as internationals. Vanier is discontinued (CGRS-D is the successor), and CGRS-M is restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons.
To see how McMaster’s faculty-tier model compares with the automatic systems at other Ontario and Canadian universities, work through our scholarships directory before finalising your OUAC choices β at McMaster more than most places, program choice and scholarship value are the same decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the McMaster University Award of Excellence?
Up to $200,000 over four years for an international student who exemplifies the highest standards of academic and personal achievement. Amounts are determined by the faculty and based on your enrolled course load, with the final value confirmed after enrolment β the Faculty of Engineering, for example, lists its stream at $35,000 per year for four years. It requires an application via AwardSpring by February 19, 2027.
Are McMaster entrance scholarships automatic?
Many are. The DeGroote business tiers, the Humanities Scholars Award, the Faculty of Humanities Global Gateway Award, the MELD scholarships and the Engineering/iBioMed/Computer Science $10,000 international entrance awards are automatic for eligible students. The Award of Excellence and the broader Faculty of Engineering scholarship pool require an AwardSpring application.
What average do I need for a DeGroote scholarship?
DeGroote’s automatic ladder has a tier at every level: averages of 95%+ receive the Dean’s Global Excellence Award ($25,000 in year one, renewable at $20,000/year), 90β94.99% receives the International Distinction Award ($20,000, renewable at $10,000/year), and 89.99% or below receives the International Scholars Award ($15,000, renewable at $5,000/year) β each for up to three renewal years while you remain in DeGroote in good standing.
Can I keep my McMaster scholarship if I change programs?
It depends on the award, and for the biggest one, no: Award of Excellence renewal requires you to remain enrolled in the faculty to which you were originally admitted, maintain full-time enrolment and keep paying international tuition fees. Faculty-specific awards like the DeGroote tiers similarly require staying in that faculty. Check any award’s terms before switching programs.
Does McMaster offer the McCall MacBain Scholarship?
No. McCall MacBain is a graduate scholarship at McGill University in Montreal. McMaster’s own flagship for international undergraduates is the Award of Excellence. McMaster graduates may later apply to McCall MacBain for master’s study at McGill if they meet its eligibility rules.
What graduate scholarships can international students hold at McMaster?
Doctoral students can compete for CGRS-D ($40,000 per year for three years) once enrolled, and for Ontario Graduate Scholarship awards administered through the university, subject to the international stream’s rules. CGRS-M is not open to international students. Most research students also receive departmental funding packages combining scholarships with teaching and research assistantships β get the components and duration in writing in your funding letter.
Are international students eligible for in-course awards at McMaster?
Yes. McMaster’s Registrar confirms international students can apply for the same in-course awards as domestic students, subject to each award’s terms. Some are open across faculties; others are specific to a faculty, program or year.
When is the McMaster scholarship deadline for 2026/27 entry?
The Award of Excellence and the Faculty of Engineering scholarship application both close on February 19, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with Engineering reference letters due February 21, 2027. Automatic awards have no separate deadline β they are assessed from your admission file and final grades.
