π Overview
Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) 2027 for Undergraduate Students: Fully Funded Bachelor’s Guide
For a high-school graduate who wants a bachelor’s degree abroad without a family’s savings behind them, very few scholarships in the world are as complete as the Global Korea Scholarship for undergraduate students β GKS-U. Run by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) for the Korean Ministry of Education, the 2027 undergraduate cycle will select 286 scholars from invited countries worldwide. Each selected scholar receives round-trip airfare, full tuition support, a funded year of Korean language training before the degree begins, and a monthly living allowance paid for the entire funded period. In other words, this is not a partial tuition discount that still leaves you to find rent, flights and language fees yourself. It is a structured, government-funded route from your high-school classroom to a Korean university degree.
This guide is written specifically for undergraduate applicants β students finishing high school, or who have recently finished it, and who are targeting the 2027 intake. It is not a copy of a graduate GKS guide with the level changed. Undergraduate GKS has its own quota, its own age limit, its own two application tracks, an associate degree option that most summaries ignore, and a timeline that runs from September to January rather than the graduate February-to-June cycle. Everything below β eligibility, benefits, documents, deadlines and selection β is the undergraduate picture, verified against the official Study in Korea GKS pages and the published 2027 GKS-U guidelines at the time of writing.
A short orientation before the detail. If you are comparing Korea with other destinations, browse the StudyGraduate scholarships directory for the government schemes of other countries, use the study abroad hub to compare costs and systems, and check the rankings pages when you start shortlisting universities. Students who later continue to a master’s in Korea will also want our companion guide to the GKS graduate scholarship. For now, though, stay on this page: the undergraduate decision β Embassy Track or University Track, which three universities, whether to learn Korean before you apply β is made once, in a short September window, and it rewards applicants who understood the rules months earlier.

One word in that table deserves emphasis because almost every older blog post gets it wrong: the allowance is all-inclusive. In recent guidelines NIIED restructured GKS support so that a single monthly payment bundles living expenses, accommodation, health insurance, settlement support, TOPIK-related grants and the degree completion grant. Guides written for older cycles list those items as separate payments on top of a smaller stipend. That structure no longer applies. When you budget, work from the monthly figure in the current guidelines and treat it as the whole of your regular income as a scholar.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility in Full
Citizenship. You must be a citizen of a country invited to the 2027 GKS-U programme β the Embassy Track list covers 74 invited countries in the published guidelines, while the University Track UIC programme is open to applicants from all countries. Both of your parents must also hold non-Korean citizenship. If you hold Korean citizenship, including dual citizenship, you are ineligible. Applicants who previously held Korean citizenship must document its formal renunciation. A defined quota exists within the Embassy Track for overseas Koreans and adoptees, who apply under that stream’s own rules.
Age. Undergraduate applicants must be under 25 years of age. For the 2027 cycle the published guidance expresses this as born after 1 March 2002. This is a hard cut-off measured against the guideline reference date, not against the day you happen to submit β check your date of birth against it before you invest in documents.
Education. You must have graduated from high school, or be expected to graduate by 31 December 2026 under the 2027 guidelines, for a bachelor’s application. Associate degree applicants must likewise be high-school graduates or expected graduates. Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree are not eligible for GKS-U β this programme is for a first undergraduate-level qualification, and holding a higher degree disqualifies you rather than strengthening you.
Academic record. Your cumulative record from high school must meet at least one of the published measures: 80 percent or higher on a 100-point scale; a ranking within the top 20 percent of your graduating class; or a CGPA of at least 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a 4.3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale or 3.23 on a 5.0 scale. NIIED converts foreign transcripts using its own table. If your school reports grades in a format that converts ambiguously, obtain an official percentage or class-rank statement from the school itself and include it β boundary cases are decided on documents, not on an applicant’s own optimistic conversion.
Health. You complete a self medical assessment with the application, and finalists complete an official medical examination. A health condition that would prevent sustained full-time study in Korea can end a candidacy at the final stage, so answer the self-assessment accurately.
Other restrictions. You may apply through one track only β Embassy or University β and dual application leads to exclusion. Only universities and departments listed in the cycle’s University Information file are eligible choices; an excellent department that is not on that list cannot be selected. Evening, online and distance programmes are outside GKS. Former GKS scholars face the reapplication restrictions set out in the guidelines, including at the same degree level.
What the Scholarship Pays For
Tuition and admission fees
NIIED pays your tuition directly to the university, up to β©5 million per semester. If your programme’s tuition is higher, the host university covers the difference, and the university also waives the admission fee. Your tuition bill for the funded period is therefore zero. The boundary to understand is duration: funding covers the standard programme length β the language year plus two to three years for an associate degree or four to six years for a bachelor’s, depending on the programme. Extending beyond the standard period, or repeating study because of failure, is not automatically funded, and changing programme after final selection is not permitted.
The Korean language year
Unless you already hold TOPIK level 5 or 6, your scholarship begins with up to one year of full-time Korean language training at a language institute connected to your host university. The programme fee is funded under the scholarship β β©5.2 million per year in the 2027 guidelines β and you receive the language-year rate of the monthly allowance throughout. The expectation is that you reach TOPIK level 3 to progress smoothly into degree study. If you reach level 5 or 6 within the first six months, you may be exempted from the remaining language period and begin your degree the following semester. Scholars who arrive already holding TOPIK 5 or 6 skip the year entirely. Treat the language year as a real, assessed course: it is the foundation for a degree that, in many departments, is taught substantially in Korean.
Monthly allowance
The allowance is published as an annual total in the 2027 undergraduate guidelines: β©13,560,000 for the language year and β©14,400,000 for each degree year β β©1,130,000 and β©1,200,000 per month respectively. As explained above, this is an all-inclusive payment: rent or dormitory fees, food, transport, the health insurance contribution, settlement costs and completion support all come from it. In Seoul, dormitory housing is the economical default in the language year; outside the capital the same allowance stretches noticeably further, which is a practical β not merely strategic β argument for taking regional universities seriously. The guidelines state that scholarship amounts may be subject to change, so the figure in your own cycle’s guideline PDF and your award documents are the authority.
Airfare β and its exceptions
GKS provides an economy-class ticket at actual cost for your entry to Korea and your return after completion. The published exceptions are specific: entry airfare is not provided to a newly selected scholar who is already residing in Korea at the time of the final announcement; travel beginning in a country other than your country of citizenship is not supported; domestic travel inside your home country and travel insurance for the journey are not covered. Note also the repayment clause: a scholar who withdraws within the first three months after enrolment must return the scholarship amount received. Selection is a commitment, not a free option to hold.
Embassy Track vs University Track β and the Associate Degree Option
| Question | Embassy Track (156 places) | University Track (130 places) |
|---|---|---|
| Where you apply | Online through the Study in Korea portal, under your Korean embassy’s recommendation | Directly to one GKS-designated university |
| Streams | General (88), R-GKS (61), Overseas Koreans & Adoptees (7) | UIC (100), Associate Degree (30) |
| University choices | Up to 3 universities; General applicants must include at least one Type B (regional) university; R-GKS applicants choose up to 2 Type B universities | Exactly 1 university and 1 department |
| Selection rounds | Embassy screening β NIIED review β university review | University screening β NIIED confirmation |
| Who it suits | Applicants who want up to three chances and are competitive within their country’s quota | Applicants with one clear target β especially in science/engineering (UIC) or a vocational associate programme |
| Fatal error | Applying through both tracks in the same cycle β dual applicants are excluded | |
The strategic reality sits inside the quotas. Country allocations on the Embassy Track are small β in the published 2027 guidelines, for example, Bangladesh’s embassy allocation is three places, Nepal’s two, Pakistan’s three and India’s four across the General and R-GKS streams β so embassy competition is intense per place even though the global number looks comfortable. The University Track spreads competition differently: the UIC stream’s 100 places are a single global pool for science and engineering applicants, and the associate degree stream’s 30 places serve a smaller, more vocational applicant pool. Neither track is “easier”; they reward different profiles. Choose deliberately, because you cannot hedge by entering both.
The associate degree option deserves a paragraph of its own because most GKS summaries never mention it. Under the University Track, 30 places fund two-to-three-year associate programmes at designated colleges β practical, employment-oriented qualifications in fields such as engineering technology, design, culinary and hospitality-related studies and applied sciences. For a student whose goal is a skilled technical career and a shorter time to employment, an associate degree fully funded β with the same airfare, language year and allowance structure β can be a better decision than competing for a bachelor’s place against applicants with stronger academic records. Read the associate list in the University Information file before you default to a bachelor’s application.
Programmes and Fields of Study
The General programme spans the full breadth of undergraduate study at the participating universities: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, arts and physical education, business, education and engineering. The official portal lists 28 Type A universities β concentrated in Seoul and the capital region, including Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, Sungkyunkwan University, Hanyang University and POSTECH β and 42 Type B universities in regional cities, including Pusan National University, Kyungpook National University, Chonnam National University and Chungnam National University. The University Information file, published with the guidelines, is the definitive list of which departments at which universities accept GKS-U scholars in your cycle; departments open and close between cycles, so never build a shortlist from a previous year’s file or a blog post.
The UIC (University-Industry Cooperation) specialisation, available only through the University Track for associate and bachelor’s applicants, places students in science and engineering departments whose curricula are built with industry partners and include structured field experience. If your aim is an engineering career with Korean industry exposure, a UIC department may serve you better than a more famous general department. The R-GKS stream, within the Embassy Track, exists to direct scholars toward regional universities and the communities around them β and because fewer applicants research regional choices properly, a well-chosen R-GKS application is often more distinctive than a third application to a saturated Seoul department.

How to Apply, Step by Step
- Download and read the current guidelines. Get the 2027 GKS-U Application Guidelines and the University Information files from the GKS Notice board on Study in Korea. Every date, quota, form and rule in this guide is subordinate to those documents.
- Confirm eligibility line by line. Citizenship (yours and both parents’), the under-25 cut-off, expected graduation by the guideline date, and the 80 percent / top-20-percent / CGPA threshold. Do not proceed on an assumption about any of them.
- Choose your track. Embassy Track for up to three universities within your country’s quota, or University Track for one university β UIC or associate degree. One track only.
- Shortlist from the University Information file. Embassy General applicants: three universities, at least one Type B. Check each department’s own notes on language of instruction and any additional requirements.
- Start document legalisation immediately. Graduation certificates and transcripts typically require apostille or consular legalisation, and citizenship documents for you and your parents must be assembled in the prescribed form. In many countries this step alone takes weeks and is the most common cause of a rushed, defective file.
- Write the personal statement. Explain your motivation, academic preparation, relevant experience and awards, and your goals β with specific evidence, not general admiration for Korea.
- Write the study plan. For undergraduates this covers your Korean language preparation plan, your degree study plan, and your plan after graduation. Name the department and what you will study there; a plan that could be pasted into any country’s application will score like one.
- Obtain the recommendation letter. One letter in the GKS format from a teacher or school official who knows your academic work, sealed and signed exactly as the guidelines require.
- Complete every form. Application form, applicant agreement, pledge, self medical assessment and the consent for verification of school records β signed and dated as instructed, with name spellings identical across the whole file.
- Add score evidence. A TOPIK certificate earns bonus points and, at level 5β6, changes your language-year status; English certificates and a limited number of award certificates support the file where the guidelines allow.
- Submit through your single track, on time. Embassy Track: online via Study in Korea inside the published window (15β30 September 2026 for the 2027 cycle). University Track: to the university by its own deadline between September and November. Keep proof of submission.
- Complete the final steps. Pass the selection rounds, complete the official medical examination when requested, receive final selection, apply for the D-2 student visa through the Korean embassy, and travel on the instructed dates for the language programme start in late February.
Required Documents
The undergraduate file consists of: the application form; personal statement; study plan; one recommendation letter in the prescribed format; applicant agreement; pledge; self medical assessment; personal data collection and use consent; proof of citizenship for the applicant and both parents (birth certificate, family relationship certificate, passport or national document as your country’s instructions specify); proof of renunciation of Korean citizenship where applicable; high-school graduation certificate or expected-graduation certificate; full high-school transcripts; and, where applicable, TOPIK certificates, English proficiency certificates and award certificates within the stated limits. Academic documents generally require apostille or Korean consular legalisation. Two checks catch more defective files than any others: every name and date must match across every document, and every legalisation must be completed before the deadline, not promised for later.
Deadlines and Timeline
| Stage | 2027 GKS-U schedule (published) |
|---|---|
| Guidelines announced | September 2026 |
| Embassy Track applications | 15β30 September 2026, online via Study in Korea |
| University Track applications | SeptemberβNovember 2026, exact date set by each university |
| Screening rounds | OctoberβDecember 2026 (embassy/university β NIIED β university) |
| Final results | 7 January 2027 (published schedule; the portal summary rounds this to DecemberβJanuary) |
| Arrival in Korea | Late February 2027 |
| Programme start | Korean language programme from March 2027, degree the following March for most scholars β or degree entry directly for TOPIK 5β6 holders under the guideline rules |
Two warnings belong with any timeline. First, the Embassy Track window is short β about two weeks in the 2027 cycle β and it does not wait for slow legalisation; applicants who begin documents in September are already late. Second, University Track deadlines differ by university by weeks. The binding date for your file is the one in your embassy’s notice or your university’s GKS page, and tracking those dates is exactly the kind of task the StudyGraduate tools section exists to support. Build your preparation backwards from the earliest date that could apply to you.
Selection Criteria β and How to Improve Your Chances
Selection proceeds in rounds: embassies or universities screen first, NIIED reviews, and the universities you named assess departmental fit in the final round for the Embassy Track. Evaluation weighs your academic record most heavily, then the quality of the personal statement and study plan, the recommendation, and bonus points β TOPIK certification carries explicit additional weight, and English proficiency and awards contribute within the published rubric. The preparations with the highest return, in order: earn any TOPIK certificate before the deadline, because even a beginner level is scored evidence of commitment and higher levels compound; write a study plan addressed to a real department, naming subjects, facilities or faculty interests you have actually read about; research your Type B choice as seriously as your first choice, because reviewers can tell; support a boundaryline GPA with an official percentage or rank statement; and submit a defect-free file β every form present, signed and legalised, every spelling consistent. At this scale, selection is partly an audit, and complete files are the ones that survive audits.
Set expectations honestly. With 286 places worldwide and small national quotas, most qualified applicants will not be selected in any given cycle, and a rejection is not a judgement that you were unqualified β it is usually arithmetic. Unsuccessful applicants may apply again in a later cycle if they still meet the age and education rules, and second applications that fix the first file’s weaknesses β a TOPIK certificate added, a sharper study plan, a better-judged university list β are a recognised route to eventual selection.
Common Mistakes
Applying through both tracks and being excluded entirely. Forgetting the mandatory Type B university in an Embassy Track General application. Choosing a department that is not in the current University Information file. Starting apostille or consular legalisation after the window opens. Name spellings or birth dates that differ between the passport, certificates and forms. A study plan about Korean culture in general rather than the named department’s curriculum. Budgeting from old blog posts that list separate settlement and insurance grants the current all-inclusive allowance has replaced. Assuming a bachelor’s degree holder can apply β they cannot. Treating selection casually without reading the early-withdrawal repayment clause. And the simplest mistake of all: following the month in a general guide instead of the exact closing date in your embassy’s or university’s notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GKS for undergraduates really fully funded?
For the funded period, the core costs are covered: tuition (NIIED up to β©5 million per semester, the university covering any excess and waiving admission fees), the one-year Korean language programme, an all-inclusive monthly allowance (β©1,130,000 in the language year; β©1,200,000 during the degree, per the 2027 guidelines), and round-trip economy airfare. Items the guidelines exclude β domestic travel in your home country, journey travel insurance, dependants’ costs β remain yours.
Do I need TOPIK or IELTS to apply for GKS-U?
Neither is compulsory for a standard undergraduate application. TOPIK is nevertheless one of the highest-value additions to a file: it earns bonus points in selection, and TOPIK level 5 or 6 exempts you from the language year entirely. English certificates can support applications to English-taught departments. If you have time to earn one certificate before September, TOPIK is the one designed for this scholarship.
Can I apply if I am still in my final year of high school?
Yes, if you are expected to graduate by the date the guidelines set β 31 December 2026 for the 2027 cycle β and you submit an expected-graduation certificate in the prescribed form, followed by the final certificate as instructed. What you cannot do is apply on the basis of a graduation date later than the guideline allows.
What is the difference between a bachelor’s and an associate degree under GKS?
A bachelor’s is a four-to-six-year degree at a university; an associate degree is a two-to-three-year, employment-focused qualification at a designated college, funded through 30 dedicated University Track places. Both carry the same airfare, language year and allowance structure. The associate route suits students targeting skilled technical careers and a shorter path to employment.
How competitive is GKS-U in my country?
Very, in most invited countries. The Embassy Track’s 156 places are divided into national quotas that are often in single figures β three for Bangladesh, two for Nepal, three for Pakistan and four for India in the published 2027 guidelines. The University Track’s UIC pool (100 places, all countries) and associate pool (30 places) distribute competition differently, which is why track choice is a strategic decision and not a formality.
Can I choose only Seoul universities?
Not on the Embassy Track General stream: at least one of your up to three choices must be a Type B regional university, and R-GKS applicants choose only Type B universities. On the University Track you choose a single university, which may be in the capital region if that university and department are on the UIC or associate lists.
What happens during the Korean language year?
You study Korean full-time at a language institute connected to your host university, funded at β©5.2 million per year with the language-year allowance. The working target is TOPIK level 3 for progression into degree study; reaching level 5 or 6 within the first six months can exempt you from the remainder and move you into your degree the following semester. Persistent failure to meet the language requirement can end the scholarship under the guideline rules.
If I am not selected, can I apply again next year?
Yes β unsuccessful applicants may reapply in a later cycle provided they still satisfy that cycle’s age, education and restriction rules. Because the age cut-off is under 25, most high-school graduates have several cycles available. Use the interval deliberately: a TOPIK certificate and a revised university list change a second file materially.
Sources & Verification
This guide was compiled from official sources checked at the time of writing: the Korean Government’s Study in Korea portal, GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Program pages, for programme structure, the 286-place undergraduate quota and its track breakdown, Type A and Type B university lists, eligibility criteria and selection schedule; and the NIIED 2027 Global Korea Scholarship Application Guidelines for Undergraduate Degrees published through the same portal, for the tuition cap, language programme fee, annual allowance totals, country quotas, the under-25 reference date and the September application window; the Korean Government’s announcement of the GKS application period was also carried on Korea.net, the official website of the Republic of Korea, which confirms the programme’s structure of tuition, language training, airfare and settlement support. Figures are identified with the cycle that published them because NIIED revises amounts and quotas between cycles.
