Best Bachelor’s Degrees for International Students in 2027: Pay, Demand and Where to Study Them

A bachelor’s degree is the biggest education purchase most families ever make: three or four years of tuition, three or four years of living costs, and a subject choice made at seventeen or eighteen that shapes the first decade of working life. Choosing it well for study abroad in 2027 means balancing three things that do not always point the same way — pay, demand, and personal fit — inside the rules of a country you do not yet live in: its tuition model, its post-study work permission for bachelor’s graduates specifically, and its licensing rules for the profession you have in mind.

This guide compares the strongest bachelor’s degrees for international students on evidence, not slogans. Pay and demand figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, using May 2025 medians and 2025–35 projections, with the source and period stated beside the figures. A BLS median is the middle wage of all workers in an occupation in the United States, including experienced workers. It is not a starting salary, not a graduate-outcomes figure, and not a forecast for any other country. Used properly, it tells you which occupations a bachelor’s degree feeds, how those occupations pay at mid-career maturity, and whether official projections expect them to grow.

The guide is for school leavers — including students applying after higher-secondary qualifications — and for parents and sponsors comparing countries. It covers the degrees themselves, what each one actually teaches, typical entry requirements, the real cost structure by country using verified figures, careers and salaries, and where to study each degree, with links to program and university profiles so you can verify every program on its official page.

Begin with the Courses and Programs directory to see the breadth of bachelor’s subjects, keep the honest tuition-versus-salary ROI comparison beside this guide when money is the deciding factor, and note the undergraduate application route for your country — for the UK, for example, applications for 2027 entry run through UCAS with a fee of £34.50 for up to five choices, an early deadline of 15 October 2026 for the most competitive courses and an equal-consideration deadline of 13 January 2027.

At a Glance: Bachelor’s Degrees Compared on Pay and Demand

Bachelor’s degree Main occupation it feeds Typical entry education for that occupation (BLS) Median annual wage, BLS May 2025 Projected growth, BLS 2025–35 Projected openings per year
Computer Science Software developers Bachelor’s degree $135,980 10% for developers, QA analysts and testers as a group About 106,100 for the group
Computer Science / Cyber Security Information security analysts Bachelor’s degree, plus related experience $129,180 21% About 14,100
Data Science / Statistics / Mathematics Data scientists Bachelor’s degree minimum; some employers prefer a master’s $120,230 35% About 24,800
Engineering (mechanical example) Mechanical engineers Bachelor’s degree $104,110 11% About 17,800
Nursing Registered nurses Bachelor’s is one of three BLS routes; licence required $97,550 6% About 180,800
Accounting / Finance Accountants and auditors Bachelor’s degree $83,680 5% About 115,300
Business / Management General and operations managers (experienced occupation) Bachelor’s degree in BLS most-new-jobs table $105,770 for general and operations managers Varies by management occupation Management occupations about 1.1 million openings per year in total (BLS group page)

Read the business row carefully: the $105,770 figure belongs to general and operations managers, an occupation reached with experience, not to a new business graduate’s first job. That single distinction — between the occupation a degree eventually feeds and the job a graduate first gets — is the most important reading skill for every salary table in this article.

1. Computer Science: The Strongest All-Round Bachelor’s

Computer science earns first place on the combined evidence. BLS lists a bachelor’s as the typical entry education for software developers, reports a median of $135,980 in May 2025 for developers, and projects 10% growth from 2025 to 2035 for developers, QA analysts and testers together, with about 106,100 openings per year for the group. The same bachelor’s, with mathematics added, is the minimum route into data science ($120,230 median, 35% projected growth, BLS May 2025 and 2025–35) and, with experience, into information security analysis ($129,180, 21%). Few other bachelor’s degrees open three distinct high-median occupations at once.

What you study: programming in at least two paradigms, data structures and algorithms, computer systems and architecture, databases, operating systems, networks, software engineering with team project work, and mathematics including discrete mathematics and, for data routes, probability and linear algebra. The BSc Computer Science profile sets out this structure. Where to study it: strong programs exist in every major destination; choose on curriculum depth, internship or placement year availability, and post-study rules for bachelor’s graduates — in Canada, degree graduates are exempt from the PGWP field-of-study rule that applies only to non-degree college programs, and in the USA, a computer science degree is the classic route to STEM OPT eligibility, subject to the program’s official STEM designation. Entry requirements typically include mathematics at a strong school-leaving level and English proficiency; some universities require specific programming evidence, most do not.

2. Engineering: Accredited, Demanding, and Built to Last

Engineering bachelor’s degrees — mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, biomedical and their relatives — are the classic durable choice. Using mechanical engineering as the verified example, BLS reports a median of $104,110 in May 2025, projected growth of 11% from 2025 to 2035 and about 17,800 openings per year, with growth linked to automation and innovation. The Bachelor of Engineering profile explains degree types; our comparison of engineering degree formats is also useful background when offers arrive with different titles.

What you study: mathematics and physics foundations, mechanics, materials, thermodynamics or circuits depending on branch, design projects, laboratory work and, in accredited programs, supervised competencies that regulators recognize. That last word — accredited — is decisive. In most countries, professional engineer status requires an accredited degree plus supervised experience and examinations. An unaccredited bargain program can be the most expensive mistake in this entire list. Where to study: Germany deserves special attention for engineering bachelors because most public universities charge no tuition (exceptions: Baden-Württemberg non-EU fees of €1,500 per semester and non-EU fees at TU München), but many German bachelor’s programs are taught in German, so language preparation is part of the plan, not an afterthought. Elsewhere, compare laboratory quality, placement years and accreditation status before prestige.

3. Nursing: The Clearest Licence-to-Job Bachelor’s

Nursing is the bachelor’s with the most direct line from graduation to a named, licensed occupation. BLS describes three education paths for registered nurses — a bachelor’s, an associate degree, or a diploma from an approved program — with licensure required in all cases, and notes that a bachelor’s or higher is often necessary for administrative, research, consulting and teaching roles and is preferred by many hospital employers. The occupation’s figures are distinctive: a median of $97,550 in May 2025, modest projected growth of 6% from 2025 to 2035, but about 180,800 openings projected per year, the largest absolute openings figure in this guide, because the workforce is roughly 3.5 million and replacement demand is constant.

What you study: anatomy, physiology, microbiology, psychology and behavioural sciences, pharmacology basics, and extensive supervised clinical placements — BLS notes all nursing programs include supervised clinical experience, and bachelor’s programs typically take four years. Where to study: only where the program is approved by the nursing regulator of the country in which you intend to register, and where clinical placement capacity is real. International nursing applicants must also check registration and language requirements for internationally educated nurses in that country; they are regulator rules, not university marketing, and they decide whether your degree becomes a job.

4. Data Science, Statistics and Mathematics Bachelor’s Degrees

A dedicated data or statistics bachelor’s is a newer route into the occupation with the strongest growth in this article. BLS says data scientists typically need at least a bachelor’s in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field, while some employers require or prefer a master’s or doctorate. The occupation’s median was $120,230 in May 2025, with projected growth of 35% from 2025 to 2035 and about 24,800 openings per year (BLS). A bachelor’s holder should expect analyst-level first roles and a possible master’s later; that is a normal, respectable pathway, not a failure.

What you study: calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistical inference, programming, databases, machine learning foundations, data visualization and communication — the last is a genuine BLS-listed quality for the occupation, because data scientists must convey results to non-technical audiences. Choose a mathematics- or statistics-anchored program over a light “data” title, and check that you will graduate with portfolio projects using real datasets.

5. Accounting, Finance and Business: Volume Hiring With a Credential Ladder

Accounting is the volume business bachelor’s: BLS projects about 115,300 openings per year for accountants and auditors, growth of 5% from 2025 to 2035, and a median of $83,680 in May 2025, with a bachelor’s in accounting or a related field as the typical requirement. The career ladder is credentialed — in the U.S., CPA licensure requires passing a national exam, meeting state requirements and completing 150 semester hours, which is why many students plan a five-year combined route. Other countries run their own chartered or certified systems; study where you intend to be credentialed if you can, because tax and company law are local.

General business and management bachelor’s degrees are broader and riskier. They can lead toward management occupations — BLS lists a management-group median of $126,520 in May 2025 and about 1.1 million openings per year across management occupations — but those medians belong to experienced managers. A business bachelor’s earns its place when it contains accounting, finance, data analysis and a specialization, plus internships; a purely generalist degree with no quantitative core is the weakest entry in this guide. Students drawn to business should also read the demand evidence in our guide to the most in-demand courses to study abroad in 2027 before committing.

6. Health and Life Sciences Beyond Nursing

Public health, biomedical science, psychology and related bachelor’s degrees feed health systems in non-clinical and preparatory roles, and they are often the first step toward graduate routes such as a Master of Public Health or advanced clinical training. Be precise about what a bachelor’s in these subjects does and does not license: a biomedical science degree does not make you a doctor, a psychology bachelor’s does not by itself license you as a psychologist in most jurisdictions, and a public health bachelor’s usually leads to program, data, community-health and administrative support roles before graduate specialization. Their value is real but staged — plan the second stage (graduate degree, credential, experience) at the same time as the first, and price both.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

Degree Subjects usually expected at school-leaving level Other typical requirements
Computer Science Mathematics (strong); computing welcomed but often not required English proficiency set by university and visa rules
Engineering Mathematics and physics; chemistry for chemical / biomedical branches Accredited program check; language of instruction — notably German for many German bachelor’s programs
Nursing Biology / science and mathematics or equivalent Health and background checks, clinical placement agreement, regulator-approved program
Data Science / Statistics Mathematics (strong), ideally with statistics Programming evidence helpful; check calculus prerequisites
Accounting / Business Mathematics for accounting, finance and economics-heavy programs Later credential planning (for example CPA 150-hour rule in the USA)
Health / Life Sciences Biology and chemistry for biomedical routes Clear plan for graduate or licensing stage where the bachelor’s alone does not license

Gap years and foundation routes exist in several countries, and a study gap can be explained honestly in an application; what matters is that the underlying subject prerequisites are genuinely met by the time the degree starts, because first-year mathematics and science are where under-prepared students are lost.

Costs: What a Bachelor’s Really Costs by Country

Multiply everything by three or four. That is the bachelor’s cost problem, and it is why country choice matters more at undergraduate level than at master’s level. Statistics Canada reports that international undergraduate tuition averaged CAD 41,746 per year in 2025/26, against CAD 24,028 at graduate level — so a four-year Canadian bachelor’s screens at roughly CAD 166,984 in tuition alone on that average, before living costs, while a two-year graduate degree screens at roughly half of one undergraduate year per year of study. Those are national averages for screening, never a quote. Canada’s study-permit living-funds requirement is CAD 22,895 for applications to 31 August 2026 and CAD 23,448 from 1 September 2026, excluding tuition.

The UK maintenance requirement for a Student visa is £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, up to nine months (caps £13,761 and £10,539), rising to £1,570 and £1,203 for applications on or after 30 November 2026 — a floor for visa evidence, and a reminder that London rent can dominate a budget. Germany changes the structure entirely for many students: a blocked account of €11,904 per year as financial evidence, and no tuition at most public universities, with Baden-Württemberg charging non-EU students €1,500 per semester and TU München charging non-EU fees; against that, many bachelor’s programs require German. Australia requires financial capacity for living costs of AUD 29,710 per year. The USA has no single official tuition average used in this guide; prices vary so widely by institution that only the official fee page of each university is meaningful. Use the tuition fee calculator for a full-program total — one year multiplied by the real duration, plus living costs — and compare countries with a guide such as our cost of studying in the UK guide before shortlisting.

Careers and Salaries After a Bachelor’s: Reading the Numbers Honestly

Three rules keep bachelor’s salary expectations honest. First, medians are mid-career reference points. A software developer median of $135,980 (BLS, May 2025) describes the middle of a workforce that includes senior engineers; a new graduate earns less and progresses. Second, openings matter as much as growth: nursing’s 6% growth with about 180,800 openings a year and accounting’s 5% growth with about 115,300 openings a year both describe large, steady hiring systems, while data science’s 35% growth describes a fast-expanding but smaller occupation with about 24,800 openings a year. Third, your legal window to enter that hiring system is set by post-study rules for bachelor’s graduates specifically: in Australia, a bachelor’s graduate’s Subclass 485 duration is two years; in Canada, a bachelor’s graduate can receive a PGWP of up to three years depending on program length, and degree graduates are exempt from the field-of-study rule, with CLB 7 language level for degree graduates; in the USA, F-1 bachelor’s graduates get 12 months of OPT, plus a 24-month STEM extension if the degree is an eligible STEM degree; in the UK, the Graduate Route is currently two years for bachelor’s graduates, fee £937 plus Immigration Health Surcharge at £1,035 per year, with an announced reduction to 18 months for applications on or after 1 January 2027; in Germany, graduates get an 18-month job-seeker permit. None of these guarantees a job, sponsorship or settlement.

Where to Study Each Degree: A Country-by-Subject Logic

Computer science and data: strong in the USA for labour-market depth and STEM OPT, in Canada for the degree-level PGWP route, and in Germany at low tuition where English-taught bachelor’s options exist and meet your language profile. Engineering: Germany for tuition structure and industrial depth if German is realistic; Canada, the UK and Australia where accreditation and placement years are strong — verify the accrediting body for each program. Nursing: study in the country where you intend to register, in a regulator-approved program, full stop. Accounting and business: study where you intend to credential, because tax, company law and professional exams are jurisdiction-specific. Health and life sciences: map the graduate stage first — for example an MPH or a clinical doctorate — and choose the bachelor’s country that feeds it cleanly. Browse institutions in the university directory, check each shortlisted program on its official university page, and use the university comparison tool on the site when two offers look similar on paper.

How to Choose Your Bachelor’s: A Decision Sequence

First, name the occupation or occupation family, not just the subject — “software developer”, “registered nurse”, “accountant” — and read its BLS entry level, median and projection. Second, check the licence or accreditation that occupation requires in your target country, and eliminate any program that does not satisfy it. Third, cost the full degree, all years, in one currency, using official fees and the living-cost figures in this guide. Fourth, check post-study permission for a bachelor’s graduate in that country, including any announced change that will apply by your graduation year — the UK Graduate Route change announced for 1 January 2027 is exactly the kind of fact a 2027 entrant must price in. Fifth, test fit honestly: look at a first-year module list and a past paper or problem set where available, and ask whether you want to do that work weekly for three or four years. Sixth, keep an adjacent option: computer science beside mathematics, engineering beside computer science, accounting beside business analytics. Degrees with adjacent doors forgive a change of mind; single-door degrees do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bachelor’s degree for international students in 2027?

On combined pay and demand evidence, computer science is the strongest general answer: a bachelor’s is the typical entry level for software developers, the BLS May 2025 median is $135,980, and the same degree supports data and security routes. Nursing is the strongest answer for licensure clarity, and engineering for accredited durability. The best degree for you is the highest-evidence degree you can complete well.

Is a bachelor’s in data science better than computer science?

Not automatically. BLS says data scientists need at least a bachelor’s in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field, and some employers prefer a master’s. A computer science bachelor’s keeps more doors open at graduation; a data bachelor’s is more specialized. Compare curricula, especially mathematics depth.

Which bachelor’s degree pays the most?

Among occupations with a bachelor’s as typical entry, software developers show the highest median used here — $135,980 in May 2025 (BLS) — with information security analysts at $129,180 and data scientists at $120,230. These are U.S. occupational medians for all workers, not starting salaries, and not figures for other countries.

Can I work after a bachelor’s degree abroad?

Most major destinations offer a post-study route, but durations and conditions differ by degree level: Australia 485 is two years for a bachelor’s, Canada PGWP can be up to three years, the USA gives 12 months OPT plus a possible 24-month STEM extension, the UK Graduate Route is currently two years with an announced cut to 18 months from 1 January 2027, and Germany gives 18 months to seek work. Check the current rules for your exact situation.

Is a three-year bachelor’s recognized the same as a four-year bachelor’s?

Recognition depends on the country, the institution and the purpose — employment, licensure or graduate admission. Many three-year degrees from recognized systems are fully accepted, but some graduate programs and regulators specify credit or duration expectations. Verify with the specific university or regulator before enrolling.

Should I study nursing in a different country from where I want to work?

That is risky. Nursing registration is country-specific, and internationally educated nurses face regulator assessment and additional requirements. The safest route is a regulator-approved program in the country of intended practice.

Are foundation years worth it for bachelor’s entry?

They can be, where they genuinely teach the mathematics or science prerequisites for the degree and lead directly into it. Compare total cost — foundation plus degree years — and the progression rate and conditions, in writing, before paying.

How important are rankings when choosing a bachelor’s?

Less than accreditation, curriculum, cost and post-study rules. Rankings can help build a longlist, and QS and THE should always be cited separately by provider, but no rank compensates for an unaccredited nursing or engineering program or an unaffordable fee.
